La Libertad: Beach, Museums and City Views
Accommodation in La Libertad
La Libertad brings together a beach in the canton’s main town, museums, a sanctuary, and a viewpoint. The character of the place thus ranges from the beach and city views to art, everyday history, and religious destinations. When choosing your vacation rental, you can consider which of these highlights you’d like to shape your stay.
Beach and city as points of reference
Playa de La Libertad is in the canton’s main town and is 500 meters long. If being close to a beach matters when choosing where to stay, this location offers a clear point of reference. Its precise length also makes the beach easy to compare with Playa de Cautivo, which is in the wider canton area.
Two museums, different perspectives
Museo Casa León was built in 1991 at the initiative of Ecuadorian visual artist León Ricaurte. It displays artistic and everyday objects from Ecuador’s pre-Columbian, colonial, and contemporary periods. The collection thus brings together different kinds of objects spanning a broad period—from the pre-Columbian era to the present day.
La Casa de los 100 Años offers a different perspective. This urban museum on the Malecón in the canton of La Libertad preserves part of the area’s history. Fishing equipment in the collection includes net weights, weights for divers, anchors, and oyster picks. The museum also displays objects and figures from the Huancavilca and Valdivia cultures. Concrete fishing tools are presented alongside exhibits about two cultures, giving the museum’s collections a distinctive character.
Local landmarks and views
Santuario Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza stands on Avenida 9 de Octubre, opposite the local town hall. Mirador La Caleta, in the Sector 10 de Agosto, offers views of the city and the beach. A religious site with a clearly defined location and a viewpoint with two named subjects offer different ways to explore La Libertad.
Playa de Cautivo in the wider canton area
Playa de Cautivo is in the northwest of the canton of La Libertad, near the La Carioca sector, and is one kilometer long. You can swim there and take part in beach sports such as volleyball, soccer, and surfing. In comparison, the canton has a 500-meter-long beach in its main town and the longer Cautivo beach in the northwest. Swimming and the listed sports are also specific activities available at Cautivo.
More cultural destinations in Guayas
The wider destination of Guayas is also home to distinctive cultural sites. In Nobol, on the banks of the Río Daule, lies Santuario Nacional Narcisa de Jesús, a pilgrimage destination. The incorrupt body of Santa Narcisa de Jesús is kept there. Also in Nobol, Hacienda San José is considered a place to visit: Narcisa de Jesús was born there on October 29, 1832. These sites give Guayas its own religious and biographical points of interest.
