Discover Cotundo: Park, River and Festivals
Accommodation in Cotundo
Cotundo brings together central attractions, cultural celebrations and activities in the surrounding area. In the town center are Parque Lineal Padre Mario Perín and the bathing area on the Misahualli River, where Carnival is celebrated. There are opportunities for guided hikes in the community of 9 de Junio and at the parish level in Cotundo; other activities include visits to waterfalls and caves, as well as canoe trips. Before choosing a vacation rental, you can consider whether central attractions or excursions in the surrounding area should play a bigger part in your stay.
Park in the Center of Cotundo
Parque Lineal Padre Mario Perín is in the center of Cotundo, opposite the Santuario de la Virgen Del Quinche. Its amenities include paths, a bridge, children’s play equipment and animal monuments depicting animals from the area. From a viewpoint, you can look out over the river. The park was created in honor of the missionary Padre Mario Perín. The grounds thus combine a personal tribute with depictions of local animals and views of the river. If you are traveling with children, you can include the available play equipment in your day’s plans.
Carnival and Parish Founding Celebration
Carnival is centered on the bathing area on the Misahualli River in the town center. The program includes the election of the Carnival Queen, dance competitions, artistic performances and popular dances. The competitions and performances give the festival different facets and offer a tangible insight into Cotundo’s cultural traditions.
Further afield in the region, celebrations marking the founding of the parish of Cotundo take place every year in late January; they commemorate its founding on February 1. The program includes the election of the Ñusta Yachak Rumi Warmi, also known as the “Reina nativa,” traditional dance competitions, traditional and popular games, trade fairs, civic parades, artistic performances and popular dances. The parish founding celebration has a different occasion and geographic setting from Carnival in the town center. If you are planning a trip specifically for one of the festivals, check the current dates for the relevant program.
Hikes and Other Activities
The community of 9 de Junio is three kilometers from the center of Cotundo; the Sacha Waysa community tourism center is located there. Guided hikes to petroglyphs, a waterfall and a traditional chacra are offered in the surrounding area. Confirm current arrangements before visiting. At the parish level in Cotundo, there are also hikes along trails, visits to waterfalls and caves, and canoe trips. Canoe trips offer a different focus from hikes and visits to waterfalls or caves.
