Data de Villamil: Beaches, Mangroves and Religious Art
Accommodation in Data de Villamil
Data de Villamil combines beaches, a waterway surrounded by mangroves and religious art. Swimming is possible along the coast, birdwatching is a main attraction at the Estero, and the Monasterio de Santa Teresa adds a cultural dimension. When looking for a holiday rental, you can first consider whether you would like your trip to focus mainly on the coast, nature watching or religious art.
Beaches and the wider coastline
The beaches of Data Villamil stretch for approximately 2.5 km. You can swim there; check local conditions before making specific swimming plans. In the wider region, the beaches are part of a continuous 13.25 km stretch of coastline. It extends from the Punta Chapoya sector in General Villamil Playas to the mouth of the Estero de Data. The town's beaches are therefore part of this larger area, not the entire stretch of coastline. For orientation, it is worth distinguishing the length of the local beach from the extent of the wider coastline.
Mangroves and birdwatching
The Estero, also called the Data de Villamil waterway, is located in the Recinto Data de Villamil. The waterway, surrounded by mangroves, offers the chance to observe, among other species, great egrets, snowy egrets, cormorants, frigatebirds and curlews. This natural area is quite different from the open coast: here, mangroves and the bird species mentioned above take center stage. Those who enjoy birdwatching will find a different focus at the Estero than at the beach.
Religious art at the Monasterio de Santa Teresa
The Monasterio de Santa Teresa was founded in May 1975 and has a collection of stained-glass windows. Their subjects include the Trinity, the Incarnation of Christ in Mary, and Saint Teresa of Ávila. The images bring together central themes of the Christian faith and a specific saint. Religious art thus adds another dimension to the picture of Data de Villamil, which is otherwise shaped mainly by the coast and mangroves.
