El Progreso brings together traces of history, distinctive architectural features, and paths through a varied landscape. The ruins of the former El Progreso hacienda and sugar factory lie in the center; the Casa del Ceibo is also located there. Quinta El Ceibo adds an unusual room design and reused building materials to the area's historical themes. Vegetation zones change along the way to Laguna de El Junco, before a sweeping panorama opens up. Local history, architecture, and landscape thus offer distinct interests for travelers.

Traces of Sugar Production

The ruins of the former El Progreso hacienda and sugar factory are located in the center of El Progreso. The grounds of Quinta El Ceibo contain the remains of a sugar factory that operated there and are considered historical evidence of the Galápagos Islands' past. This gives the former factory a concrete connection to the place; its historical significance is explicitly linked to the remains on the Quinta grounds. Anyone interested in the area's history will find more than just a name here: the hacienda and sugar factory are tangible aspects of the local past.

Casa del Ceibo and Quinta El Ceibo

The Casa del Ceibo is located in the center of El Progreso and is considered a tourist attraction. Another architectural feature is the treehouse room at Quinta El Ceibo: it is 15 meters high and can be reached via a suspension bridge more than 28 meters long. Reused materials such as beer bottles, crates, and discarded tires were used for parts of the buildings at Quinta El Ceibo. Its height, bridge length, and choice of materials give the design a distinctive character and complement the historical traces with an architectural perspective.

Trails Through the Landscape and Region

On the way to Laguna de El Junco, visitors pass through several vegetation zones and the agricultural settlement of El Progreso before reaching a viewpoint with a sweeping panorama. The route is defined by more than just the viewpoint: the sequence of vegetation zones and the settlement also contribute to the landscape experience.

Further afield, a paved road corridor connects Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, El Progreso, Cerro Verde, and Playa de Puerto Chino; it includes a signposted cycling route. The road surface and signage may change. If you plan to use the cycling route, check both before setting out.

Processions in the Region

Religious traditions also offer a glimpse of routes and places in the region. The procession of the Virgen del Cisne is associated with a seven-kilometer walk in September, from the Iglesia Catedral in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno to the Iglesia del Cristo Redentor in the Parroquia El Progreso. In November, the procession of the Virgen del Quinche is associated with a 21-kilometer walk from the Iglesia Catedral to the church in the Cerro Verde sector. The two routes differ considerably in length and in the months when they take place, and each leads to a specifically named church destination.

Choose the Right Focus

If you are looking for a holiday rental on San Cristobal, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip. Cultural heritage in the center, Quinta El Ceibo's architecture, the trail to the lagoon, and regional procession routes appeal to different interests. This can help you decide whether local history, distinctive architecture, or the landscape and regional culture should be the main focus of your plans.
