Nitrate heritage and archaeological signs
Nitrate works, geoglyphs and the Tamarugo forest give Pozo Almonte a distinctive character. In the municipality of Pozo Almonte, the Humberstone and Santa Laura nitrate works form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, added to the World Heritage List in 2005. Visitors can explore its streets, squares and buildings, as well as exhibitions and museographic displays about life in the Pampa in the past.
The Museo Municipal de Pozo Almonte is dedicated to preserving, researching and sharing the historical and cultural heritage of Pozo Almonte and the Pampa del Tamarugal.
The geoglyphs of Cerro Pintados reveal another facet of the municipality’s history: the archaeological site has been a National Monument since 1969. A total of 450 zoomorphic, anthropomorphic and geometric figures have been identified there—including animal and human motifs, as well as geometric shapes. The path by the Pintados geoglyphs is easy and 600 meters long.
Pampa landscapes and routes
The Reserva Nacional Pampa del Tamarugal extends across the municipalities of Huara and Pozo Almonte and includes Chile’s largest native Tamarugo forest.
The municipality of Pozo Almonte is also home to the Mamiña hot springs. They include several very hot thermal springs, among them Ipla and Tambo; the average water temperature is over 40 °C.
In the nearby town of La Tirana, 18 km from Pozo Almonte, a pilgrimage in honor of the Virgen del Carmen takes place every year on July 16. The Museo de la Vivencia Religiosa del Norte Grande in La Tirana is dedicated to the religious identity of its cultural community and how it continues to develop. Also nearby, the nine-kilometer Ruta del Peregrino leads to La Tirana. Along the route are four rest stops with shade, seating and solar lighting. The route and the pilgrimage offer different points of interest: one is a specifically described trail, the other a religious event held annually on the same date.

The historic Barrio Estación is part of Pozo Almonte’s historic center. The Parroquia San José and the Casa Parroquial are designated in Pozo Almonte as immovable cultural heritage.
