Itabaiana: Nature, Waterfalls and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Itabaiana
Waterfalls, dark bathing pools, challenging mountain trails, and a vibrant food culture give Itabaiana many different facets. Parque Nacional da Serra de Itabaiana is located mostly within the municipality of Itabaiana in the state of Sergipe and also extends into Areia Branca, Laranjeiras, Itaporanga D’Ajuda, and Campo do Brito. In this protected area, Atlantic Rainforest and Caatinga ecosystems meet a water-rich landscape with waterfalls—a setting that favors ecotourism.
Nature Experiences and Trails in the Serra
For a visit to the national park, the entrance is a useful landmark: the park is on BR-235, and a gate marks the entrance. From there, an unpaved road leads to Poço das Moças. The dark pool is the first swimming stop for visitors entering through the main gate, and it lies in an area with a strong current. It is suitable for swimming.
For those considering a longer hike, Trilha do Paredão e do Caldeirão is a very difficult route. The trail features steep climbs and sections running along a rocky escarpment; the ascent takes an average of four hours. Possible starting points are the edge of BR-235 near Quatro Água or Povoado Alto do Vento in Itabaiana. The first stop on the Caldeirão trail is Cachoeira Grande, also known as Três Cachoeiras. It is described as the largest and tallest waterfall on the route.
Another hiking option starts at Parque dos Falcões: Trilha do Paredão dos Falcões continues to waterfalls near the summit of the Serra. Parque dos Falcões is a center for the breeding, propagation, and conservation of birds of prey, as well as a reference center for their care, breeding, and rehabilitation. The institute looks after more than 400 birds, including hawks, falcons, and owls. This offers you the option of making nature or the work with birds of prey a focus of your trip.
Waterfalls and Historic Sites
The Povoado Ribeira area also has natural attractions with different features. At Pilões da Ribeira, there is a waterfall with clear water where visitors can swim. Above the waterfall are three small pools, also suitable for swimming. Access to Poções da Ribeira is via an unpaved road and then a steep, low rocky section that takes physical effort to cross. Cemitério da Ribeira is also in the municipality of Itabaiana, on elevated ground; from there, visitors can see the surrounding mountains and neighboring settlements.
Ruínas da Igreja Velha preserve the site of the Santo Antônio chapel, which dates to the first half of the 17th century. At the time, the chapel was the religious center and settlement nucleus for the population in the Itabaiana region. Igreja Velha is an archaeological site in the village of Igreja Velha and is considered a regional historic landmark. Those interested in religious traditions can discover another dimension along the Via-Sacra route: every year during Holy Week, people of various religions gather there to fulfill vows and take part in pilgrimages. The route begins at the main entrance to the national park and ends a few meters beyond the ICMBio headquarters.
Markets, Cashews, and Regional Cuisine
Feira Livre de Itabaiana has more than 500 stalls, attracts residents of neighboring towns and tourists, and takes place twice a week. For regional food, Casa de Farinha at Praça de Eventos in central Itabaiana is another place to visit. For decades, it has produced and sold typical Northeastern foods throughout the year, including cookies, cakes in a variety of flavors, tapioca and peanut beijus, and homemade sweets.
Cashews are also part of the local food culture. Casa da Castanha in Itabaiana sells the local cashew product. In Povoado Carrilho, cashews are the main source of income for about 90 percent of the families who live there. The two places thus offer different perspectives on the product—from its sale in Itabaiana to its importance to families in Carrilho.
Find a Vacation Rental for Your Trip
The municipality’s official tourist route, Rota da Serra, is established by Law No. 2.471/2021. It brings together landscape viewing, religion, shopping, ecotourism, culture, and gastronomy. These interests can guide your choice of a vacation rental in Itabaiana: are you mainly planning visits to markets, regional food, and city attractions, or are hiking trails and waterfalls your priority? Itabaiana also offers the shopping, dining, and entertainment options at Shopping Peixoto, including a food court and four movie theaters. The location of your accommodation depends on which of these travel experiences you want to prioritize.
