Discover Tanabi through its squares, chapels, and cultural themes. The city’s history stretches from its founding mass through successive chapel buildings to a name that plays an important role in local religious tradition. Cultural projects and urban leisure spots offer other interests to explore. You can decide which themes will shape your trip.

Squares and Chapels Tell Tanabi’s Story

On July 4, 1882, Tanabi’s founding mass was held at the site of what is now Praça Stélio Machado Loureiro. The bus station is now located in the center of the square. The chapel where the founding mass was held was dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição; the place became known as Conceição do Jatahy. The documented history thus begins at a named square with a religious dedication.

The chapel stood until 1891. It was then replaced by a masonry chapel with French roof tiles from the Alferes brickworks. In 1933, the earlier chapel gave way to a new chapel in the city center, which remained dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição. This sequence shows how the dedication was preserved through the different phases of construction.

Praça Nossa Senhora da Conceição is also a concrete point of reference for the area’s history. It is located in city block 103 and is bordered by Rui Barbosa, Nilo Peçanha, José Siriani, and Capitão Daniel da Cunha Moraes streets. It was officially given the name by which it had already been known in Tanabi for many years. Nossa Senhora da Conceição herself is considered an important reference point in local history, culture, and religious tradition. The founding mass at today’s Praça Stélio Machado Loureiro and the naming history of Praça Nossa Senhora da Conceição are distinct aspects of the cultural heritage.

Cultural Themes and a Planned Walking Tour

The 2026 Circuito Sesc de Artes program scheduled a two-hour walk in Tanabi for April 18 at 2 p.m. The route was to run between Praça da Matriz and Quintal de Cultura. Under the title “Trilhas da Memória: O Chão Indígena e o Tambor Negro,” the walk was to include cultural expressions from the city such as Folia de Reis, Jongo, and Capoeira. The event thus combines a walk with several distinct traditions; it was announced for this specific date.

Another look at the city’s cultural work leads to Coletivo Quintal de Cultura. In December 2025, the nonprofit collective was described as a private-law legal entity based at Rua 7 de Setembro, No. 673. It develops cultural and educational projects to preserve intangible cultural heritage, promote social inclusion, and expand access to culture in Tanabi. The city’s cultural landscape thus includes not only the history of chapels and squares, but also work on intangible heritage and educational initiatives.

Leisure Spots for Different Interests

Espelho D'Água “Luiz Lourenção” has a children’s playground. In March 2025, it was also noted that many families use the site at night for leisure and socializing. A lighting problem was also reported. If an evening visit is part of your plans, check the situation before you go. The playground and the described family use give this spot a different focus from the historic chapels.

Another leisure option is Parque Ecoturístico Jamil Salomão, where an outdoor fitness area was described in May 2025. If you are considering visiting, check the condition of the facilities before your visit. The two leisure spots appeal to different interests, so you don’t have to limit your trip to just one kind of experience.

A Time-Specific Perspective on Cycling

Street planning offers another perspective. In the work on Avenida Diego Carmona Garcia described in April 2024, the cycling facility was initially planned for the median, next to the sidewalk. During the work, it was moved into the roadway design and built as a bike lane. Appropriate road markings, reflective road studs, and signs were required. This description sets the facility’s design in the context of the time; it adds a transportation-planning perspective to the topics of history, culture, and leisure.
