Sarapuí: Buffalo Milk, Tropeiro Tradition and Ciclorrota do Búfalo
Accommodation in Sarapuí
Sarapuí brings together the history of the Tropeiros, buffalo milk production and a long cycling route. This offers different ways to shape a trip: cycling the Ciclorrota do Búfalo, learning about local traditions or tasting regional products. When looking for a holiday rental, you can consider which of these interests you want to shape your stay.
Cycling the Ciclorrota do Búfalo
Sarapuí’s main route is the Ciclorrota do Búfalo. It is about 61 kilometres long and runs mostly along unpaved roads. The route is self-guided and forms a loop; it starts and ends at Casa do Artesão and the Centro de Informações Turísticas. Its length and road surface are important details if you are planning a cycling trip and want to factor the route into your itinerary.
If you enjoy exploring independently during your stay, this route offers a clear focus. You can also take a different approach to your trip: Sarapuí’s Tropeiro history and buffalo milk products offer other themes that can take centre stage without the cycling route.
Tropeiro tradition and events
Sarapuí grew out of a Tropeiro resting place called Capela da Fazendinha in the early 19th century. The Tropeiro tradition is also reflected in horseback processions and Tropeadas held throughout the municipality. Those interested in history and local traditions will encounter a defining aspect of the town that extends beyond individual sights.
The year-round events calendar for residents and visitors is also part of the town’s tourism and cultural life. It adds another possible focus to the historical connections. Since people in a travel group may have different interests, it is worth considering whether cycling, tradition or events should influence your choice of a holiday rental in Sarapuí.
Buffalo milk and regional products
Sarapuí is located in Brazil’s largest buffalo milk-producing region and is one of the municipalities with the highest daily production of buffalo milk. There are several specific ways to explore this theme. Empório Queijos e Derivados welcomes visitors for tastings by appointment; it also has its own restaurant. Both tastings and restaurant visits therefore require an advance appointment.
At Queijaria Sítio São José, visitors can meet buffalo, learn about how they are raised and sample products made there. Vinhedos Divina Essência offers tastings, and grape picking is also available there at certain times. The experiences have different focuses: alongside buffalo milk products, the activities described in Sarapuí also include wine tastings and grape picking.
One Pé na Roça programme included breakfast at Sítio Tirisco, visits to Casa do Artesão and the Do Nonno cheese factory, a horse-drawn carriage ride and a tasting of dairy products. A Pé na Roça – Rota do Búfalo programme included a tasting of wine and buffalo milk products at Vinhedo Família Marques. As past examples, these programmes give an idea of the different ways excursions in Sarapuí have been arranged.
