São Sebastião combines colonial history with sacred art, maritime history, and Caiçara culture. The Centro Histórico is home to preserved colonial buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. There are also museums and events that appeal to a range of interests, from architectural history and collections to regional cuisine.

Colonial Buildings and Sacred Art

The Centro Histórico encompasses historic buildings spanning two centuries. On one specific guided tour of the district, guides and interns from the municipal tourism office SETUR accompanied a group of 34 students, who visited the Cruzeiro, the Antigo Grupo Escolar Henrique Botelho, the Igreja Matriz, the Capela de São Gonçalo, the Casa Dória, the Casa das Janelas, the Casa de Câmara e Cadeia, the Praia Hotel, and the Casa Esperança. The tour showcases the variety of places along the route—from churches and chapels to houses and public buildings.

The Casa Esperança is an 18th-century colonial townhouse protected as a historic landmark by IPHAN and Condephaat. São Sebastião also has seven blocks of colonial houses, churches, and museums protected by Condephaat. For visitors interested in historic architecture, the town offers various types of buildings and protected ensembles to discover.

The Igreja Matriz also tells the story of a distinctive construction technique: it was built from stone, shell lime, and whale oil. The Capela de São Gonçalo houses the Museu de Arte Sacra, where sacred images and colonial furnishings are on display. The chapel itself also features protected architecture. Visitors who enjoy combining architecture with collections will find two different aspects of sacred culture here.

Maritime History and Regional Culture

At FUNDAMAR in São Sebastião, you can explore a different focus. It preserves shipwrecks and maritime history and offers a museum visit in Praia Grande, with collections on marine archaeology and marine biology. The theme of the sea complements the historic buildings with a look at underwater finds and biological collections. You can also consider São Sebastião if you are interested in maritime history and science as well as architecture.

Regional cuisine and local culture take center stage at the Festival Gastronômico Caiçara. Held in March at the Complexo da Rua da Praia, it features traditional dishes, shows, and local culture. The festival combines culinary experiences with an events program. This may make it an interesting destination if, alongside historic sights, you would also like to discover regional food culture.

The Festival HAHAHA put another focus on performances and entertainment. Its first edition was free and offered more than 15 entertainment options from nationally known and local artists, from April 10 to 12. Performances took place at four venues in the Centro Histórico: the Complexo Turístico da Rua da Praia, the Anfiteatro da Rua da Praia, the Praça do Coreto, and the Teatro Municipal. The program catered to different age groups, including children and older adults. This entertainment-focused event is distinct from the museum and architectural-history offerings, which may help you decide what kind of cultural experience interests you most.

If you would like to discover these cultural sides of São Sebastião, you can choose a holiday rental based on your interests: historic buildings, sacred art collections, maritime history, or regional cuisine. The town guide also features Maresias.
