São Roque brings together forest landscapes, wine traditions, and cultural landmarks with a long history. Nature trails and birdwatching sit alongside historic buildings and churches; there is also the Roteiro do Vinho, with its businesses and three roads. If you are planning a trip, you can focus on nature, history, religious traditions, or regional products. These different interests can also shape your search for a vacation rental.

Forest Areas, Trails, and Waterfalls

Parque Natural Municipal Mata da Câmara is a roughly 130-hectare remnant of the Atlantic Forest. Hiking trails wind through the area, which is home to animals and plants typical of this ecosystem. There are also opportunities for birdwatching. The forest, trails, and wildlife give nature a specific focus in São Roque if you enjoy spending time outdoors on your trip.

Recanto da Cascata is another remnant of the Atlantic Forest and covers five hectares. The Carambeí River borders the area and forms waterfalls there. Swimming is not possible. Trilha da Cascata reopened in 2023; access is weather-dependent and it is closed on rainy days. Check the conditions before planning a visit and take the weather into account when planning your day.

Brasital has its own nature trail: the ecological Caminho das Águas is about two kilometers long and offers a way to experience the natural landscape. Together with the hiking trails in Mata da Câmara and Trilha da Cascata, it provides another reason to include nature and trails in your travel plans.

Architecture, History, and Religious Traditions

Casa Grande and Capela de Santo Antônio were built in 1681. Mário de Andrade acquired the properties and transferred them to the Serviço de Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional in 1947. Their architectural and artistic features are considered genuinely Brazilian expressions.

Brasital was established in 1890 by industrialist Enrico Dell’Acqua as one of the first textile industries in the state of São Paulo, and later became part of São Roque’s public cultural heritage. The former weaving halls now house a library, cultural and vocational workshops, a music room, and two event halls. Brasital thus represents both a chapter in industrial history and contemporary cultural and vocational uses.

At Igreja da Matriz, ceiling and wall paintings by the Gentilli brothers, along with mosaic-like stained-glass windows, depict the life of Saint Roch. A genuine relic of his forearm is kept on the altar. Igreja de São Benedito was built by enslaved people in 1855; its rammed-earth construction was typical of the time.

The architecture of Igreja de São Benedito provides excellent acoustics. The church hosts musical events and choral gatherings throughout the year. An annual triduum with a fair, Mass, and procession is also held there; dates and programs may change. On Morro do Cruzeiro stand a cross and an image of Saint Roch, the city’s patron saint. The image used to stand outside the old Igreja Matriz, which dates from the 19th century. A novena is held on Morro do Cruzeiro in late July and early August, attracting hundreds of worshippers; exact dates may vary.

Wine, Regional Products, and Travel Planning

São Roque’s Roteiro do Vinho includes more than 30 businesses along Estrada do Vinho, Estrada dos Venâncios, and Rodovia Quintino de Lima. These three main roads are considered well paved and nearly free of curves. Wine production in São Roque dates back to the 17th century and was continued by Portuguese and Italian immigrants.

Artichokes are also among the region’s agricultural products. Spring is considered the best season to see the crops. On Sundays, a market is held at Recanto da Cascata, offering food, crafts, flowers, fruit and vegetables, as well as musical performances. Since dates may change, it is a good idea to check before visiting the market.

When choosing a vacation rental in São Roque, you can first consider which experiences you want to shape your trip: forest trails and birdwatching, historic buildings and churches, or wine traditions and regional products. Then check which location suits your preferred destinations and planned daily schedule.
