São Roque: Culture, Forest and Trails
Accommodation in São Roque
São Roque brings together historic churches and cultural sites with woodland and hiking trails. Its attractions range from Brasital, one of the early textile industries in the state of São Paulo, to places rooted in religious tradition. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the different highlights: architectural history, nature experiences and recurring events.
Brasital and Historic Buildings
Industrialist Enrico Dell’acqua had Brasital built in 1890. The complex was one of the first textile industries in the state of São Paulo. Brasital also includes a wooded area of about 30,000 square metres. The ecological trail Caminho das Águas is around 2,000 metres long, is considered a short route and gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy the natural landscape. This makes it possible to combine a visit to the historic complex with a nature walk.
The churches, too, tell different chapters of the town’s history. The Igreja da Matriz features paintings by the Irmãos Gentilli and mosaic windows depicting the life of Saint Roch. A new Igreja da Matriz was built between 1934 and 1941. The Igreja de São Benedito dates back to 1855: enslaved people built it from rammed earth. The Casa Grande and the Capela de Santo Antônio were built in 1681. These dates show how far back the architectural history of these places reaches.
Religious landmarks can also be found on Morro do Cruzeiro. There is a cross and an image of São Roque, the city’s patron saint. The Igreja de São Benedito hosts religious and musical events and choir gatherings throughout the year; specific programmes may change. Each year, the Triduum in honour of São Benedito includes a small fair in the square in front of the church, a Mass and a procession. The Novena on Morro do Cruzeiro draws hundreds of worshippers in late July and early August and is celebrated in connection with the city anniversary and the feast of Saint Roch. Exact dates may vary.
Forest and Trails
The Parque Natural Municipal Mata da Câmara is a remnant area of the Atlantic Forest covering about 130 hectares. Hiking trails and opportunities for birdwatching are among the nature experiences available there.
The trail descriptions can help you choose a hike: Caminho das Águas is considered a short route, while Morro do Saboó can be reached via a moderately difficult hiking trail. At Recanto da Cascata, there is the Trilha da Cascata, which reopened in 2023. Check the current access conditions before visiting. This will help you keep the different destinations and their respective conditions in mind when planning your day.
Market and Trip Planning
The Feira Permanente at Recanto da Cascata takes place on Sundays. It offers food, handicrafts, flowers, and horticultural and agricultural produce. Check the schedule before you travel. Along with the churches, Brasital and the nature trails, the market offers another possible focus for your stay.
When looking for a holiday apartment in São Roque, you can start by asking yourself what you would like your stay to focus on: history and churches, nature trails and birdwatching, or events and a visit to the market. For hiking, there is also a clear choice between the route Caminho das Águas, which is considered short, and the moderately difficult trail at Morro do Saboó.
