São Carlos brings science and city history to life: calculating machines, a science center, and a museum in the former railway station offer different perspectives on the city. When choosing a vacation apartment, it also helps to consider your plans for each day: would you like to focus mainly on central cultural attractions, or include religious traditions and destinations in the municipality as well?

Calculating Machines and Science in the City Center

The collection at Museu de Computação Odelar Leite Linhares includes calculating machines made by Olivetti, Facit, Monroe, Original-Odhner, and Brunsviga. The range of manufacturers makes the subject tangible and gives the collection a clear profile. The museum is located at the Instituto de Ciências Matemáticas e de Computação (ICMC) at USP, Avenida Trabalhador São-Carlense, No. 400, in central São Carlos.

The listed opening hours are Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 19:00, and Saturday, 08:00 to 12:00. Individual and group visits can be arranged through the website. Confirm your visit arrangements in advance so you can plan around the stated hours and arrangements.

Espaço Interativo de Ciências is also in the city center, in a historic building with themed indoor spaces and a medicinal herb garden outside. A compass rose in the floor mosaic at the entrance to the CDCC building arranges the cardinal directions in a flower shape, with each direction marked at the end of a petal. Imprints of mammal and bird tracks can be found around the building. They were made from prints collected in the field and are intended to help visitors become more familiar with shapes. The “Memórias do CDCC” exhibition consists of four printed canvas panels. It tells the story of the science center’s origins in São Carlos and the achievements of its staff and contributors. The compass rose, tracks, and calculating machines offer very different, vivid topics to discuss with children.

City History in the Former Railway Station

Museu de São Carlos is located at Praça Antonio Prado, s/n, in the city center. It is housed in the city’s former railway station, a historic building dating from 1884. The museum preserves and promotes the history and culture of the region. It welcomes local residents, tourists, and school and university pupils and students every day, including those interested in regional history. If you plan to visit the museum, confirm the current visiting arrangements in advance.

Jardim da Estação offers another story of a dated transformation: between 2013 and 2017, it was renovated for visitors with upgraded paths and flower beds and a modernized landscape design. The city’s attractions thus reflect a range of priorities: historic institutions, science, and the development of a landscaped green space.

Traditions and Destinations in the Municipality

The first chapel in honor of Nossa Senhora Aparecida da Babilônia was built in 1870 in the rural Bairro Babilônia, in the municipality of São Carlos. Santuário Nossa Senhora Aparecida da Babilônia welcomes pilgrimages and processions throughout the year. On August 15, a major festival in honor of Nossa Senhora Aparecida da Babilônia is held for its devotees; the program may vary from year to year. If you would like to include religious traditions in your itinerary, you can use this annual date as a guide and check the program for the relevant year.

Caminho da Fé also offers a different perspective on the region. The 44 km section between São Carlos and Descalvado has two support points: Bairro da Babilônia, with a church and support from a local resident, and SPA Água Santa, which may be able to offer pilgrims overnight accommodation if needed. Check the route and available support before setting out. The Ramal São Carlos Borromeu passes through a landscape shaped by plains, sugarcane fields, and eucalyptus forests; the route is also described as having shady paths and extensive agricultural land.

Parque Ecológico “Dr. Antônio Teixeira Vianna” is located in the municipality, at Estrada Municipal Guilherme Scatena, km 2. A municipal report dated August 7, 2026, lists more than 300 animals from over 100 South American fauna species there; the figures may change. The destinations therefore have clearly distinct focuses: central cultural attractions in São Carlos contrast with destinations in the municipality and a pilgrimage route through its own distinctive landscape.

Choose Accommodation to Suit Your Priorities

When looking for a vacation apartment in São Carlos, you can plan your accommodation around this distinction. If science and city history are central to your stay, the centrally located institutions are a natural point of reference when choosing a location. If you also want to include pilgrimages, Caminho da Fé, or Parque Ecológico, plan these destinations in the municipality as separate day-trip priorities. First decide what kind of days you want to spend, then look for accommodation that suits your plans.
