Peruíbe combines an extensive coastline with protected landscapes and a layered history. Praia de Peruíbe stretches for 13,394 metres, from Praia do Tapirema to the mouth of the Rio Preto. There are also beaches with distinctive surroundings and places where the region’s archaeology and early settlement come to life. When choosing your holiday apartment, it is therefore worth first considering whether you want to focus your stay primarily on beaches, nature experiences or culture.

Coastal landscapes with distinct characteristics

Parque Estadual do Itinguçu lies in the municipalities of Peruíbe and Iguape and covers 5,040 hectares. Praia da Barra do Una is also located within Estação Ecológica Juréia-Itatins. Mangroves, forest, restinga, floodplains and dunes shape the landscape there. Nature lovers will find a different experience here from that of Peruíbe’s long beach: rather than a single stretch of coastline, the focus is on a landscape with several distinct habitats.

Praia do Caramborê is also within Estação Ecológica Juréia-Itatins and is about 550 metres long. Its modest length clearly distinguishes it from the kilometres-long Praia de Peruíbe. At Prainha, meanwhile, the panoramic views of rocky coastlines and islands, as well as a natural fishing platform, are among its distinctive features. This platform is formed by a rocky outcrop that extends about 800 metres out to sea. These varied coastal landscapes can help you plan your excursions according to whether you want to discover wide-open beaches, protected nature or striking rock formations.

Active days by the sea and on the water

Praia de Peruíbe is suitable for running, cycling and surfing. Its length gives the coastline a different scale from the roughly 550-metre-long Praia do Caramborê; the activities mentioned also offer various ways to spend time at the beach. Ecological excursions, surfing and water sports are available at Praia do Guaraú and the port of Rio Guaraú. Peruíbe therefore offers a choice of both sporting activities on the beach and options connected with the river and nature. If you are planning a family trip, you can decide together which of these activities appeals most for your stay.

Prainha has its own distinctive appeal: in addition to views of the rocky coast and islands, its natural fishing platform defines the spot. These coastal and water experiences offer different points of reference for planning your holiday; they do not describe every beach in the same way. So choose your accommodation according to what you want to focus on during your days in Peruíbe, rather than on the place name alone.

Archaeology and the region’s history

Museu Histórico e Arqueológico de Peruíbe is housed in a former railway station building and has an archaeological collection. It presents the settlement history of the Juréia region, from the sambaquis to Indigenous culture and colonization. This makes it possible to explore different periods of history rather than reducing it to a single point in time.

Another historic site is the Ruins of Abarebebê in Convento Velho, eight kilometres from downtown Peruíbe. They can be reached via Avenida Padre Anchieta. The ruins were built in the second half of the 16th century to catechize the Tupi who lived in the region. In 1984, they were listed as heritage sites by IPHAN and CONDEPHAAT and are part of São Paulo’s national and state historical heritage. For culturally curious travellers, this site complements the museum’s themes with a tangible relic from the colonial period.

Aquário de Peruíbe displays more than 80 species of fish, reptiles, amphibians and crustaceans. Together with the archaeological collection and the history of Abarebebê, it offers another point of interest for a stay that includes discoveries on land as well as the coast and nature.
