Lavrinhas: River, Mountains and History
Accommodation in Lavrinhas
Lavrinhas connects the Rio Paraíba do Sul with the mountainous landscape at the foot of the Serra da Mantiqueira. The river runs through the town and has rapids; the surrounding landscape is shaped by clear, bluish waterfalls. Pedra da Mina is also part of the area’s natural landscape: part of the mountain lies within the municipality of Lavrinhas, on the border with Queluz and Passa Quatro. Visitors looking to explore water, mountains, and local history during their vacation will find a range of different points of interest here.
River Landscapes and Swimming
In the Capela do Jacu area, there are natural swimming pools formed by rivers. The Cachoeira da Pedreira – Rio do Braço, with its clear water and natural hydro-massage pools, is also located in the Capela do Jacu district. Balneário Perroni offers swimming in the clear waters of the Rio Jacu. Balneário Rancho do Zé João offers a different water experience, with a natural pool and a clear-water river.
Balneário Rancho Carlos Lopes offers different attractions: a lake, a fishing pond, and pedal boats. When planning a vacation, it helps to distinguish between these options by interest: swimming, natural waterside settings, or a combination of a lake, fishing, and pedal boating are different ways to spend time here. Families can discuss together which type of waterside stay best suits their preferences, without treating all the experiences as the same.
Mountains and Outdoor Activities
Rampa de Voo Livre – Lavrinhas is a natural ramp at an elevation of 876 meters, with a vertical drop of 367 meters. Rampa do Jacu can be reached via Sítio Pé da Serra and offers facilities for outdoor activities. Both are associated with the mountains and outdoor pursuits; specific elevation figures are available for Rampa de Voo Livre – Lavrinhas.
The Serra Fina crossing is another notable feature of the area. It is connected to Lavrinhas through Pedra da Mina and is considered the most difficult crossing in Brazil. This distinction makes it especially interesting to travelers who are interested in challenging crossings. It is not the same as the riverside swimming spots: the experiences described range from water and outdoor recreation to mountain activities and crossings.
History, Crafts, and Local Traditions
Several chapters of local history come together in Lavrinhas. The train station was inaugurated in 1874 and is one of the city’s main attractions. The Pontilhão is a passage on the Dom Pedro II Railway dating from 1877. The Ponte dos Arcos, named after Bellarmino José Fernandes, was built in 1933 as the first concrete bridge over the Rio Paraíba do Sul. The Ponte de Ferro is used to view the landscape and take photographs.
The Capela de São João Batista also tells the story of the town: it dates from 1920 and was built in the Gothic style. Casarão Pinheiros is a cultural center housed in a building from the late 19th century. According to records, Lavrinhas’s first coeducational school operated in the Sobradão. These diverse places and structures give visitors interested in religious architecture, railway history, and everyday life in the past specific subjects to explore.
Local crafts can be discovered at Casa do Artesão/INFOTUR. Locally made crafts are displayed and sold there; the sales outlet provides space for around 21 local artisans to offer their products. Fonte Mirífica dates from before the 1932 Revolution and is still used by residents. Its natural water also attracts visitors who want to taste it. For a culinary discovery, Pesqueiro João Luiz offers restaurant dishes described as homemade food cooked in a wood-fired oven.
One local tradition of its own is the Torneio Leiteiro, a cow-milking competition. It is traditionally held at Recinto de Exposições Benedito Inácio Nunes in the Capela do Jacu district and is described as the second-largest event of its kind in Brazil.
