Itariri – Sobá, Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Itariri
Itariri combines a vibrant food culture with long-standing festivals and natural attractions in the Atlantic Forest. Options range from cultural discoveries in town to places by the water and nature experiences beyond the city centre. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether you would mainly like to discover festival traditions or set aside more time for nature destinations.
Sobá and Festivals in the Event Calendar
Sobá is recognised as intangible cultural heritage of the municipality of Itariri and has been part of the town’s history, memory and cultural identity for more than four decades. The dish is therefore not just a culinary topic, but also part of local tradition. From 2026, Festa do Sobá will be included in Itariri’s official event calendar; it takes place on the second weekend in August.
Anarriê also has a permanent place in the city’s event calendar. The festival is traditionally held on the second weekend in July at Praça de Eventos Joaquim Ezídio in the centre of Itariri. It is one of the municipality’s longest-running events and attracts residents as well as visitors from across the region. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these festivals, they offer two different occasions throughout the year: Sobá in August and Anarriê in July.
Culture and Local History
Igreja Católica de São Benedito was built in 1925 and is now a historic cultural heritage site of the municipality of Itariri. It offers a tangible point of interest for anyone who would like to learn about the town’s architectural history as well as its festival traditions. Together, the church and the events tell different stories about local culture: a historic building on the one hand, and community traditions kept alive through festivals on the other.
The Santos–Juquiá railway line is also part of the settlement’s history. It opened in 1914; a railway station and the settlement around it were subsequently established there. Itariri is also part of the Caminhos da Mata Atlântica tourism region, together with Juquiá, Registro and Sete Barras.
Nature Destinations and Different Activities
A round trip of approximately 20 kilometres is planned for an excursion to Poço do Índio. It follows unpaved roads along the Rio do Azeite through the Atlantic Forest. The approximate total distance and road surface are useful details for planning your day. Rio das Pedras is about 6.5 kilometres from the city centre and can be reached via Estrada do Rio do Azeite.
Other destinations offer different experiences: Pedra Miúda has opportunities for swimming and enjoying nature. In summer, visitors use Pedra da Moça as a platform for jumping into the water and cooling off. From the local access point to Pedra da Moça, Saltinho is about 100 metres downstream. Pedra Cara de Macaco is among the places recommended for rappelling. This way, you can focus your trip on activities by the water or a more active nature experience without treating these options as the same.
Choosing Where to Stay
Distances from the centre can also help you plan your excursions: Prainha-Igrejinha is near Ponte da Igrejinha, about 5.2 kilometres from the city centre, and is considered one of the most visited places in summer. Pedra da Onça is about 200 metres from Ponte Pênsil. Cachoeira do Salto is about 9 kilometres from the city centre and offers several activity options.
If you’re looking for a holiday rental in Itariri, choose your location based on the experiences that matter to you during your stay. Sobá, the festivals and the historic heritage are the main attractions for cultural discoveries. If you’re planning to visit nature destinations, take into account the stated distances and the approximate route to Poço do Índio. This makes it easier to plan your stay around whether you’d rather discover local traditions or a range of nature and waterside destinations.
