Ilha Comprida combines long beaches with a diverse natural landscape and special opportunities to explore the region actively or culturally. The municipality has 74 km of beaches. At the same time, the Ilha Comprida APA includes restinga forests, dunes and mangroves. If you are considering a holiday rental in Ilha Comprida, you can decide whether beach days, nature watching, outdoor activities or cultural discoveries will shape your stay.

Beaches, Dunes and Birdlife

The APA’s landscape brings together different habitats: restinga forests, dunes, beaches and mangroves. This diversity gives Ilha Comprida a distinctive character that goes beyond its beaches. There are birdwatching routes on the island. The APA also serves as a resting and stopover area for more than 30 species of migratory birds.

A special seasonal natural event takes place at the northern tip: every year from September, thousands of scarlet ibises gather there to breed. The timing and specific location make birdlife a distinct focus for trip planning. Nature lovers can explore birdwatching routes and landscapes of forests, dunes and mangroves rather than focusing their stay exclusively on the beach.

The Dunas do Araçá can also be reached in different ways: visitors can cycle or take a long walk. The Circuito Lagamar São Paulo de Cicloturismo is another option for cycling travellers. The route is approximately 180 km long and passes through Ilha Comprida. The two options offer different scales: an outing to the dunes and a longer cycling route that also passes through the municipality.

Outdoor Activities and On the Water

Parque Linear do Rio Candapuí has cycle paths, trails and elevated walkways through the forest. The park therefore offers both cycling routes and trails and walkways. Those looking for outdoor exercise can include this park as a separate stop; those who would rather be out on the water amid the landscape can canoe or kayak on Mar Pequeno.

Surfing is another possible interest: the municipal surf school is located in the leisure area of Praia do Boqueirão Norte. Another natural destination is Baía dos Golfinhos, a natural spot for dolphin watching on the border between Ilha Comprida and Cananeia. Along with canoeing and kayaking on Mar Pequeno, these options offer different reasons to focus a stay on the water and coast, without requiring them to be part of a single itinerary.

Culture and Local Insights

The Complexo Turístico da Orla do Mar Pequeno includes a Sala de Memória and the Museu do Mar. The complex also houses the Loja de Artesanato Identitário. It displays and sells bio-jewellery, baskets, paddles, wall decorations and other items. The site combines museum visits with an insight into local crafts, although these are separate offerings.

The former Porto da Balsa is part of the municipality’s historical heritage. In Vila Nova, you can visit Capela Nossa Senhora da Conceição and Cemitério Caiçara, also known as Cemitério dos Índios. Espaço Cultural Plínio Marcos offers exhibitions, cinema, events, workshops and courses. Those wishing to include cultural places alongside nature and activities will find several different points of interest: a former port as cultural heritage, places to visit in Vila Nova, and a cultural venue offering a range of events and activities.

A Taste of Pedrinhas

At one edition of Café Caiçara, held in Pedrinhas on October 18, the offerings included Bolo de Roda, corn, cinnamon and fubá cakes, savoury pies and homemade breads. The selection offers a tangible glimpse of local food culture. The date refers to that edition of Café Caiçara; it does not indicate a recurring date.

More destinations to help you plan: Caçapava, Ribeirão Prêto, Guaratinguetá, Santa Gertrudes, Caraguatatuba, Piraju, Morungaba and Campos Do Jordão.
