Capela do Alto tells its history through specific places: the Santuário Mãe Peregrina stands on the former site of the Igreja Nossa Senhora das Dores, considered the starting point of the town’s history. In the town center, the Centro Cultural Municipal adds exhibitions, courses, and workshops to these historical traces. A paved walking path around a lagoon offers a different perspective. Here, history, culture, and recreation are distinct aspects of the area.

Local History and Cultural Venues

The Centro Cultural Municipal is located on Rua Coronel Guilherme Wincler, the urban stretch of the former Estrada São Paulo/Paraná. It hosts exhibitions, courses, workshops, and cultural activities, including guitar and film; individual program items may vary. The center also houses a permanent photo exhibition by the Memorial de Capela do Alto, documenting the municipality’s history.

The Memorial de Capela do Alto opened as a visitor attraction in 2017. Images, videos, objects, and everyday items present the town’s history. If you plan to visit for this reason, check current visitor information before you go.

In the higher part of town, the grotto at the Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Lourdes includes a shrine dedicated to a saint and a spring. During the town’s annual festivities, a blessing of the water takes place there every February. Another historical trace is Cruz do Monge: the site was associated with 14 crosses that served as Stations of the Cross during Lent until 1960.

The Centro de Eventos e Tradições João Mori Lopes, usually called CETECA, was established to preserve local cultural traditions and provide an event venue in Capela do Alto. The Fandango de Chilenas dos Irmãos Lara group is also associated with the area. It originated in the inns of traveling tropeiros, who transported troops and goods from the south to the markets of Sorocaba.

At the municipal level, Iperózinho is home to the Igreja de Santo Antonio dos Impossíveis. It houses a historically significant Baroque depiction of Santo Antônio. To the best of current knowledge, it is the only known temple where the saint bears this title.

Walking and Nature in the Municipality

The Centro Ecológico e Caminhódromo features a 1,200-meter paved walking path around a lagoon. Its specific length and circular route distinguish this recreational option from the historical and cultural attractions in the town center.

The Floresta Nacional de Ipanema offers another perspective. This state-protected area includes parts of Capela do Alto, Iperó, and Araçoiaba da Serra. It protects native Mata Atlântica vegetation, especially around Morro Araçoiaba. Admission to the protected area provides access to a historic site, self-guided trails, the Trilha das Cigarras, a climbing area, the visitor center, and the kiosk area. Check current operating conditions before traveling.

Regional Specialties and Festivals

One of the municipality’s specialties is Pastel caipira: this handmade pastry is made with cornmeal and filled with ground beef, herbs, and green corn. Its origins date back to the 1930s. Alongside the buildings and traditions, this culinary heritage also reflects the region’s distinctive character.

The Festa da Mandioca takes place annually, usually in September, in the community of Distrito do Porto. At the festival, visitors can try soups with beef ribs, sweet and savory cakes, Bom-bocados, and generous servings of cassava. Dates may change, and the food offerings vary from one edition to another, so check the current festival dates before making plans.

When choosing a vacation rental, your preferred focus can help guide your decision: cultural venues in the town center and activities throughout the municipality offer different points of reference.
