The Jacaré-Pepira River runs through Brotas, stretches for 174 kilometres and forms more than 50 waterfalls and cascades. Water shapes many of the experiences that make the place distinctive: from rapids and cascades to springs and natural swimming pools. At the same time, museums, stargazing with telescopes and insights into local production reveal other sides of the destination.

Waterfalls, Springs and River Landscapes

If you would like to discover Brotas primarily through its natural surroundings, you can include a range of waterside locations in your travel plans. Areia Que Canta has crystal-clear springs suitable for swimming. Nearby is Cachoeira São Bento: the waterfall is 25 metres high and forms a natural swimming pool. Both places pair water with a different landscape experience from the rapids of the Jacaré-Pepira River.

At Parque dos Saltos, located in the centre of Brotas, a picnic area and views of the ruins of a power station’s engine house are part of the distinctive scenery. Nature and industrial history meet here in a tangible way: in the remains of the former engine house. When choosing a holiday rental for a stay with a range of activities, you can take these different facets of Brotas into account rather than building your trip around just one activity.

Rafting and Other Activities

On a rafting trip, you travel down a river in an inflatable boat through rapids, waves and small waterfalls. The descent is led by a specialised instructor. This makes rafting a clearly guided river experience centred on travelling together on the water. Canoeing and Boia-cross are also possible in Brotas, thanks to the rapids and waterfalls of the Jacaré-Pepira River. This gives you a choice of different ways to experience the river actively.

The zipline in Vale do Serjão offers a different perspective. It is 1.8 kilometres long and runs 130 metres above the ground. These measurements convey the scale of the experience without equating it with a river descent: here, the elevated route takes centre stage, while rafting involves travelling through moving water.

Culture, Starry Skies and Local Production

The Museu do Café – Museu do Cotidiano presents the history of Brotas, which began with coffee culture. It complements the nature experiences with a look at the town’s development. In the Campos Elíseos neighbourhood, the Centro de Estudos do Universo offers opportunities to observe the sky with telescopes. This adds further options for a trip that combines cultural discoveries with water and activity.

You can also discover local production: at the Alambique Artesanal da Casa da Cachaça, the production of cachaça is demonstrated using a small still. At Brotas Beer, a guided tour of the craft brewery includes an introduction to the production of different types of beer and a beer tasting; visits are by appointment. These experiences have different focuses: a demonstration of cachaça production at one, and insights into several types of beer with a tasting at the other.

Shape Your Stay Around Your Interests

When looking for a holiday apartment or house in Brotas, it can help to start by asking what you want your trip to revolve around: river activities, swimming spots and waterfalls, culture, or insights into the production of local drinks. The town brings these themes together, though they do not offer the same experience. Travellers with different interests can take a range of plans into account and organise their stay accordingly.

Recanto das Cachoeiras offers a full-day experience for an admission fee. It is located in Patrimônio de São Sebastião da Serra, in the municipality of Brotas. Admission includes access to leisure facilities with swimming pools, a multipurpose hall and relaxation areas, as well as trails, viewpoints and waterfalls. This makes it another option for travellers who would like to plan a visit to waterfalls and several different areas at one location.
