Bertioga offers coastal areas, experiences on the water, historic sites, and a distinctive food culture. If you’re looking for a vacation rental, you can start by considering whether beaches and the sea, a boat trip, or culture and nature will shape your stay. These different priorities can help you choose a location that fits your travel plans.

Beaches and Nature in the Municipality of Bertioga

The municipality of Bertioga has 33 kilometers of beaches suitable for swimming, offering recreational activities and opportunities to enjoy various sports. Praia da Enseada is 12 kilometers long. Walking along the entire beach takes you through the neighborhoods of Centro, Rio da Praia, Jardim Rafael, Vista Linda, and Indaiá.

Other coastal destinations offer different experiences: Praia de Itaguaré is protected by Parque Estadual da Restinga de Bertioga, has no commercial establishments, and attracts surfers with its good waves. Praia do Indaiá is at the end of Praia da Enseada; its clean water is suitable for sailing, while its rich marine life attracts divers. Waves, sailing, and the underwater world offer different ways to enjoy the sea.

Parque Estadual da Restinga de Bertioga covers 9,312.32 hectares and lies entirely within the municipality. It protects biodiversity and water resources, as well as a biological corridor connecting marine and coastal areas, restinga, and Serra do Mar. The Trilha do Itaguaré in the park is 1 to 2 kilometers long. Its surroundings include preserved restinga, a mangrove area, and geological sites that are thousands of years old.

Boat Trip, History, and Local Cuisine

The Passeio de Escuna departs from Canal de Bertioga in Centro. During the trip, passengers can jump into the sea; the crew also talks about the early period of Portuguese colonization in what is now Brazil. The route may change in bad weather. If you’re planning this excursion, the departure point in Centro is a useful landmark; check in advance which route is planned for your trip.

A yearly highlight of the local food culture is Festa da Tainha. The centerpiece is grilled, split-open tainha, served with rice, vinaigrette, farofa, and bread. The fish and its accompaniments give the festival a distinct culinary theme. This makes it possible to complement a stay otherwise focused on beaches or nature with a glimpse of a recurring local tradition.

Historic Sites and Cultural Insights

In Centro, the municipality of Bertioga’s Parque dos Tupiniquins features life-size figures and scenes from Bertioga’s history. The statues include Hans Staden and the Indigenous chief Cunhambebe; another scene depicts the catechism taught by José de Anchieta and Manoel da Nóbrega. The figures bring different historical references together in one place.

The municipality is also home to Vila de Itatinga, an English-inspired historic settlement built in 1910. Visitor sites include the Nossa Senhora da Conceição church and the playing field of Itatinga Atlético Clube. Historic buildings preserve former uses as a school, pharmacy, and bakery. Access to the village involves a short boat trip on the Rio Itapanhaú, followed by 7.5 kilometers along the tracks of a historic railway.

At Praia de Boracéia, families in an Indigenous village grow hearts of palm and ornamental plants, make handicrafts, and preserve cultural knowledge through dance, music, and traditional cuisine. A route is available for visitors to Terras Indígenas Rio Silveiras, where they can also learn about a river in the Rio Silveira basin. Visits must be arranged in advance with Cacique Adolfo.

A municipal post dated May 23, 2024, describes Vila da Mata in the Bairro Guaratuba as an offering in community-based tourism. The culturally diverse community of Caiçaras, fishers, and people from Brazil’s Northeast welcomes tourists and local residents. The route described there begins at Espaço Cultural, continues to the Mirante, and then follows a short path to the home of some residents. Visitors can sample produce from the Horta Comunitária there.

When looking for a vacation rental, use the experiences you’re interested in as a guide: the Passeio de Escuna departs from Centro, while coastal, nature, and cultural destinations cater to other interests.
