Barra Bonita on the Rio Tietê: Lock, Culture and Excursions
Accommodation in Barra Bonita
The Rio Tietê makes Barra Bonita a place for activities on the water and discoveries on land. Boat trips follow the river and pass through the Eclusa de Barra Bonita beside the hydroelectric power plant. The town also offers museums, notable buildings and leisure activities for a variety of holiday plans. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can choose according to which of these sides of the town you want to shape your stay.
On the Tietê and through the lock
On a boat trip, you experience the Rio Tietê from the water; the journey also passes through the lock beside the Usina Hidroelétrica de Barra Bonita. The Eclusa de Barra Bonita is 148 metres long and 12 metres wide. It helps make the Tietê-Paraná Waterway navigable. The river trip and the lock are therefore among the defining features of a stay in Barra Bonita.
Fishing and canoeing are other options on the river. Boat trips with lunch on board are also available. If you enjoy being active on the water yourself, you can think of these options as different from an excursion by boat: canoeing and fishing offer a different focus from a boat tour, where you experience the river and the lock from the boat. Students at public schools in Barra Bonita also receive canoeing and sailing lessons through Projeto Navega São Paulo.
Buildings and local history
The Ponte Campos Salles, also known as Ponte dos Arcos, connects Barra Bonita with Igaraçu do Tietê. Built entirely of metal, the bridge was imported from Germany and inaugurated on 5 March 1915. A movable section between its central piers allowed boats to pass through. Its lighting, installed in 1978, shapes the nighttime landscape. The bridge is thus both a link between the two towns and a notable structure with its own technical history.
The Museu Histórico Municipal Luiz Saffi tells the story of the municipality’s development. The museum is housed in a former railway station building dating from 1929 and preserves photographs, newspapers and donated objects. The Memorial do Rio Tietê offers a different perspective on the river. It is located in the Centro Cultural Célia Stangherlin on the tourist waterfront promenade at Avenida Pedro Ometto 467. Its exhibits include information panels, models, nautical equipment, books, a video library and photographs for research purposes.
The Igreja Matriz de São José also offers a glimpse into local history. The first mass was held there in 1926, and its 20-metre-high tower was completed in 1929. Gothic lines, richly decorated altars and stained-glass windows donated by families from Barra Bonita define its design. Those who appreciate handicrafts can find regional kiosks selling ceramics, wooden items and textiles at Praça do Artesanato.
Leisure activities and travel plans to suit you
For a stay with a range of leisure activities, Praça do Teleférico offers several options: a 750-metre go-kart track, an artificial lake with pedal boats and a cable car. The cable car is 12 metres high and has a round-trip route of 700 metres. Minicidade da Criança covers 7,000 m² and includes numerous playground features and a miniature model of the local church. Families can choose between water activities, rides and a specially designed play area.
If you want an overview of the sights, consider the sightseeing tours on the Bonde Barra Bonita tourist train. The Trenzinho Simpatia is located in the town centre. Your preferred focus can help you choose a holiday apartment: do you mainly want to plan boat trips and activities on the Tietê, are you more interested in history and buildings, or would you also like to make time for leisure activities?
