The coast shapes the character of Barra Velha, but beaches are not the town’s only attraction: rocks, protected nature and culture also give a trip its own distinctive touches. More than 20 kilometres of coastline and seven beaches offer a range of options for planning a holiday. When looking for a holiday rental, you can first consider whether beaches, nature or culture will be the main focus of your trip.

Seven beaches, varied coastal landscapes

Barra Velha’s seven beaches include Península, Tabuleiro, do Sol (Pedras Negras), Pedras Brancas, do Grant, do Cerro and Central. Praia Central is about 800 metres long and is the city’s busiest coastal stretch. If you’d like to include different coastal landscapes in your plans, Praia do Tabuleiro offers a different feel: an expansive, light-coloured sandy beach and open sea meet natural dunes and coastal vegetation.

Rocks are also part of the coast’s character. At Costão das Pedras Brancas e Negras, light and dark rock formations contrast with one another. Along with the beaches, this variation makes Barra Velha a more diverse coastal destination than a description focused on beaches alone might suggest.

Views and protected nature

In central Barra Velha, two replicas of Cristo Redentor stand on Morro do Cristo, about 40 metres above sea level. From there, the view takes in Praia Central, Laguna de Barra Velha and much of the coastline. The site thus combines a landmark structure with sweeping views of the coast and lagoon.

The Parque Natural Municipal Caminho do Peabiru preserves a different landscape: the park protects remnants of the Atlantic Rainforest and rare wooded Restinga ecosystems. If you’d like to consider Barra Velha’s natural environment as well as the sea when planning your trip, you can include this protected landscape as a destination in its own right.

Culture and activities

Casa de Palmito was built in the 1940s from the trunks of the Juçara palm. This once-common building technique is now rare and has nearly disappeared. Centro Cultural Casa de Palmito offers permanent and temporary exhibitions, workshops, meetings, educational activities and cultural events; schedules may vary.

Praia do Cerro, a traditional surf spot, lies in the Itajuba neighbourhood in the south of the municipality. Self-guided routes connect Barra Velha’s seaside and mountain areas with rural landscapes. This means that, alongside the coastal areas, culture, protected nature and the transition to rural landscapes offer different interests to consider when planning a trip.

Getting there and getting around

The main road access to Barra Velha is via the BR-101 at kilometre 86. Road conditions and signage may change; check current directions before setting out.

Ponte Pênsil crosses Laguna de Barra Velha and connects the Quinta dos Açorianos neighbourhood with Praia da Península. A municipal tourism notice dated 9 September 2026 reported that the existing bridge was closed for safety reasons. At the time, the project for a new Ponte Pênsil had been completed. The planned structure was to retain its iconic style while offering structural improvements and accessibility; it was still undergoing approval before a later tender process. Check current access before visiting.

When choosing a holiday rental, your preferred focus can be the deciding factor: the busier Praia Central and Praia do Tabuleiro, characterised by dunes and coastal vegetation, offer different coastal landscapes. If you’d like to give more weight to nature and culture, you can also include Morro do Cristo, the park and the cultural centre in your travel plans.
