In Nísia Floresta, coastal landscapes meet lagoons, rainforest and cultural discoveries. When choosing your holiday rental, you can first consider what you want your holiday to focus on: walks by the sea, time at a lagoon, nature or places steeped in history. The municipality offers a range of options, without all experiences needing to take place in the same part of your trip.

Coastline with views and distinctive shores

Barra de Tabatinga is known for its crystal-clear water and colourful cliffs; the beach is well suited to walks by the sea. Above the coast, the Mirante dos Golfinhos lookout sits on a cliff. From this viewpoint, you may be lucky enough to spot dolphins and sea turtles in the waters of the region. If you would like to experience the coast from more than just the beach, Barra de Tabatinga also offers paragliding for visitors.

Praia de Camurupim offers a different coastal landscape: at low tide, coral barriers and reefs form saltwater lagoons. The water is considered calm and suitable for all age groups. These features give you a specific point of reference if you have a place with both a beach and lagoons in mind for your stay. The Caminho dos Santos Mártires do Brasil coastal trail also runs along the coast of Nísia Floresta.

Lagoons for different holiday ideas

At Lagoa do Carcará, the landscape is defined by fine white sand, clear water and an environment preserved for ecotourism. Stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking are associated with the lagoon. This means nature experiences and water sports appeal to different interests there. Lagoa do Bonfim is another landmark: it is considered the largest above-ground freshwater reserve in Rio Grande do Norte and a centre for water sports.

Lagoa de Arituba offers another distinctive feature: a zipline is available there. To travel from Natal to Lagoa de Arituba, take either the Rota do Sol (RN-063) or BR-101. If you are considering paid tourist 4×4 transport services within the municipality, they are subject to local accreditation, designated routes and qualified drivers. These requirements are set out in Municipal Ordinance No. 878/2018.

If you also enjoy nature away from beaches and lagoons, the Floresta Nacional de Nísia Floresta is a protected area in the Atlantic Rainforest. It covers 168.84 hectares. Alongside its waterscapes, Nísia Floresta therefore also has a clearly defined connection to protected rainforest.

Culture, history and regional cuisine

The Museu Nísia Floresta holds workshops on traditional forms of expression and skills, including Boi-de-Reis, Côco de Roda and Pastoril, as well as toy making and folk games. The museum also researches the municipality’s folk culture and creates image and audiovisual collections, postcards, photo exhibitions and the Curta Nordeste audiovisual series. A visit, then, is not limited to individual objects, but also explores traditional forms of expression and how they are presented.

Other cultural points of interest include Casa de Pedra, which was listed as a historic monument by Fundação José Augusto because of its cultural significance to the state of Rio Grande do Norte, and Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Ó. The church was built in the 18th century in the former settlement of Papari. The municipal administration also lists Estação Papary as one of Nísia Floresta’s main tourist attractions.

The Rota do Camarão Potiguar connects three historic and gastronomic stops in Nísia Floresta, Senador Georgino Avelino and Barra do Cunhaú. In Nísia Floresta, it includes guided visits to the Museu Nísia Floresta and Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Ó. For regional cuisine, Restaurante Sua Praia in Barra de Tabatinga is a specific address: it serves typical dishes, fish baked in a clay roof tile and shrimp; service is also available directly on the beach.
