Macaíba combines local history with cultural heritage and opportunities to spend time outdoors. At the Museu Solar Ferreiro Torto, the history goes back to 1614; traditional walls on Rua da Copa feature caricatures of Brazilian football personalities, and ecological trails wind around the Solar. For families who enjoy combining culture and exercise, these themes offer different ways to plan the day.

Museum and trails at Ferreiro Torto

The Museu Solar Ferreiro Torto is a historic landmark in Macaíba. In 1614, the building was known as Engenho Potengi; it was listed as a protected monument by Fundação José Augusto. The museum houses numerous objects related to the history of Macaíba. It is open Tuesday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you plan to visit, check the opening hours in advance.

Ecological trails around the Solar Ferreiro Torto are open to visitors and offer views of the Rio Jundiaí. The Complexo Cultural e Turístico do Ferreiro Torto includes two ecological hiking trails. The complex also has a space for artists, a platform for cultural performances and open-air classrooms. This means that outdoor trails sit alongside facilities for artistic and cultural activities. When planning your visit, it is advisable to check whether the trails are currently accessible.

Chapels and historic houses

The Capela de São José Operário, also known as the Capela de São José, was built in 1876 by the local community on land donated by Coronel Estevão de Moura. Baroque and Gothic elements shape the building. It is considered the oldest chapel in the municipality and was listed as a historic heritage site in 1983. Its cultural significance to the state of Rio Grande do Norte was also a reason for its protection by Fundação José Augusto.

The Solar da Madalena was listed as a protected monument by Fundação José Augusto because of its cultural significance to Rio Grande do Norte. The history of the Solar do Caxangá first leads to Coronel Afonso Saraiva: in the 19th century, the building was transferred as a dowry to his daughter, D. Segunda, for Major Antônio Andrade de Lima. Today, it is surrounded by irregular buildings that have detracted from its stately appearance.

The Casarão dos Mesquita is home to the Casa da Cultura de Macaíba and houses a memorial to the Mesquita family; cultural activities take place there. The Instituto Pró-Memória de Macaíba offers another facet of local history, with its library and collection of iconographic works.

Street art, traditions and Quilombo Capoeiras

The traditional walls on Rua da Copa feature caricatures of Brazilian football personalities. In connection with the 2026 FIFA World Cup, they were associated with enthusiasm for the tournament and appreciation for art from Rio Grande do Norte; the murals may change over time. On 17 March 2026, Rua da Copa was recognised as the cultural and intangible heritage of the municipality of Macaíba.

A regular fixture on the annual calendar is the festival in honour of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, the municipality’s patron saint: it is celebrated every year on 8 December. The festival is recognised as intangible cultural heritage of the state of Rio Grande do Norte under a state law dated 15 June 2023. Street art and the feast day therefore highlight different themes: one centres on the connection between football and art, the other on an annual religious tradition.

Afrotourism routes in Quilombo Capoeiras, in the municipality of the same name, include the Pau Furado dance, accompanied by a handmade percussion instrument, as well as historic sites such as the Cruzeiro, which symbolises the beginning of the community. In August 2025, Quilombo Capoeiras welcomed groups of visitors, mostly school groups.

When looking for a holiday rental in Macaíba, you can start by considering which experiences you want to shape your trip: local and architectural history, traditions or trails in the open air. This lets you plan around the interests of your fellow travellers without devoting every day of your holiday to the same theme.
