Caicó: Festivals, Culture and Regional Cuisine
Accommodation in Caicó
Discover Caicó through its festivals, collections and regional cuisine. The Festa de Sant’Ana has been held for more than 260 years; the Museu do Seridó connects the region’s history with themes such as art, work and devotion. There are also other cultural events and local specialities.
Festivals with Different Highlights
The annual Festa de Sant’Ana begins on the Thursday before 26 July and lasts until the following Sunday. Its sociocultural programme includes the Feirinha de Sant’Ana, the Arrastão da Juventude, the Marcha dos Idosos, the Baile dos Coroas and events on Ilha de Sant’Ana. The “beija” is considered the strongest expression of faith within the Festa. In this way, different events share the same festival programme alongside a distinctly religious moment. The Festa’s cavalcade also has a history: a group from Caicó revived it in 2002.
Another occasion is the Festa do Rosário, held in Caicó in October. It features the Afro-Brazilian dance “dança do espontão”. The Carnaval de Caicó, in turn, draws thousands of revellers with its street groups and sound trucks. It is recognised as intangible, historical, cultural and tourist heritage of Rio Grande do Norte. If you would like to experience Caicó during a festival, you can treat these different traditions as separate travel interests rather than combining them into a single programme.
History and Collections at the Museu do Seridó
The Museu do Seridó is an auxiliary institution of UFRN. It is dedicated to preserving, conserving and sharing the memory and history of Seridó. The museum is located in central Caicó at Rua Amaro Cavalcanti 123. It occupies the former building of the Senado da Câmara and the public jail of Vila do Príncipe; the building was completed in 1812.
The collection is divided into five exhibition areas. They cover the land and people of Seridó before the colonial period; society and work; devotion and art in Seridó; crafts and art; and subsistence food production. The themes range from early history to social and religious aspects, as well as craft and economic activities. For travellers who would like to focus their stay on regional history, the museum offers several distinct thematic perspectives.
Art, Crafts and Regional Cuisine
Other cultural venues add to the picture. The Centro Cultural Deputado Adjuto Dias hosts performances in theatre, music, dance and visual arts. The Casa de Cultura Sobrado Padre Guerra holds exhibitions; the Casa da Cultura has permanent exhibitions titled “Brinquedos Populares” and “Galeria dos Imortais Caicoenses”. The Complexo Cultural Ilha de Sant’Ana is home to an amusement park and the FAMUSE craft fair. The fine embroidery from Caicó bears a geographical indication seal.
Caicó’s cuisine includes carne de sol, queijo de coalho and buchada de bode, prepared according to traditional Sertão recipes. This adds regional food culture to a cultural-focused visit. If you would like to prioritise a museum visit when looking for a holiday rental, you can include a central location as a search criterion: the Museu do Seridó is located there. Other tourist attractions in Caicó include Castelo de Engady, Poço de Sant’Ana and Casa de Pedra.
