Rio Claro: Trails, Birdlife and History
Accommodation in Rio Claro
Rio Claro brings together impressive natural attractions and a multifaceted history. Here, a 310.77-kilometre multimodal route, birdlife and places connected to the former town of São João Marcos sit alongside traces of the coffee era and religious history. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Rio Claro, consider which of these discoveries you would like to shape your stay: exploring trails, observing nature or gaining cultural insights.
History in São João Marcos and Lídice
The Parque Arqueológico e Ambiental de São João Marcos is considered Brazil’s first urban archaeological site. It includes a permanent Centro de Memória with models, banners, artefacts, digital totems and a video about the history of São João Marcos. Visitors can also walk the entire Caminho Imperial. Historical storytelling and a trail to explore for yourself are therefore presented side by side in two different forms.
Other places also tell the story of Rio Claro’s past. The Casa da Cultura Manoel Gonçalves de Souza Portugal preserves, among other things, a traditional clock from the former town of São João Marcos. The Igreja Nossa Senhora da Piedade houses the image of the patron saint of the municipality of Rio Claro. It was built by enslaved people in the late 18th or early 19th century. The Capela de São Joaquim da Grama was declared state heritage by the Instituto Natural do Patrimônio Cultural (Inepac). The Festa da Paz in Lídice is considered one of Rio Claro’s most traditional celebrations and is connected to the history of Lídice.
A route for different activities
Municipal Law No. 1.402/2025 officially establishes the Volta das Águas de Rio Claro long-distance route as a strategic public initiative for sustainable development. The multimodal route is 310.77 kilometres long. It includes a total of 174 kilometres for horseback riding, 183 kilometres for hiking, 20 kilometres for canoeing and 171 kilometres for cycling. When planning your trip, you can therefore start by asking which of these activities suits your stay.
The Trilha Volta das Águas passes through ecological, cultural and historical areas of Rio Claro. These include the Parque Arqueológico de São João Marcos, the Caminho do Ouro and places connected to the coffee trade. Those interested in the landscape and regional history will find themes that converge along the route. In Rio Claro, rafting on the Rio Piraí is classed as ecotourism and extreme sport. The Represa de Ribeirão das Lajes is considered a fishing spot for tucunaré, especially between March and September.
Birdlife and landscape
A total of 371 bird species have been recorded in Rio Claro, placing the municipality 17th in the state ranking. The Vem Passarinhar event combined birdwatching in Lídice with hikes in the highlands, including along historic sections of the former railway line.
One striking feature of the landscape is Pedra do Bispo, a 1,650-metre-high rock formation in the Serra da Carioca. From the summit, the view extends as far as the city of Angra dos Reis, among other places. The Serra dos Coelhos road leading to Pedra do Bispo received drainage and paving work along a stretch of about 2.5 kilometres. The elevation, the views and a specific detail about the access road all form part of the landscape.
In the broader tourism region that includes Rio Claro, the visitor offering includes farms and colonial manor houses associated with the coffee trade, the Atlantic Forest, ecotourism and adventure outings, and rural tourism. When choosing a holiday rental, the mix of nature, culture and activities you want may be the deciding factor; the experiences described differ considerably in their focus.
