Penedo: Waterfalls and Finnish Culture
Accommodation in Penedo
Penedo combines impressive natural experiences with an unusual Finnish history. Waterfalls and viewpoints offer different ways to spend time outdoors, while museums, historic buildings, and dance traditions tell the story of the Finnish colony. You can plan your stay around whether you mainly want to discover landscapes or learn about culture and history.
Rainforest, Elevations, and Water
The Parque Municipal Turístico Ecológico de Penedo, or PAMTEP for short, covers a total area of 3,014 hectares. It borders the Parque Nacional do Itatiaia, lies in the Atlantic Rainforest biome, and spans elevations from 300 to 1,600 meters.
One of the water attractions is Cachoeira de Deus on the Rio das Pedras in Alto Penedo. There is a natural pool there. Cachoeira de Deus can be reached via a 300-meter trail with a short walk. If you enjoy combining a waterfall visit with a short walk, this is one option.
Poço das Esmeraldas is 100 meters before Três Bacias. In the midday sunlight, it takes on a greenish hue. Três Bacias is the first waterfall formed by the Rio das Pedras; its water is cold and clear. Both places offer different details to appreciate in the waterscape. Três Bacias is also in Alto Penedo.
Três Cachoeiras offers another natural setting on the right-hand side of Estrada das Três Cachoeiras. It is in a heavily wooded area suitable for picnics. When planning your day, you can therefore distinguish between visiting waterfalls, taking a short walk, climbing uphill, and having a picnic in the forest, rather than treating all the natural attractions as the same experience.
A Viewpoint with an Access Requirement
After a short uphill walk, Pico do Penedinho offers a 360-degree view of Penedo. The summit is on private property, and access requires a permit. You can get one at the chocolate factory on Avenida das Pedras, at the corner of Rua Henry Bertell. If you plan to visit this viewpoint, make sure to get the permit before going up.
Finnish History and Culture
The Finnish colony of Penedo was founded in 1929, and the memory of the Finnish colonists is preserved here. The Museu Eva Hilden da Cultura Finlandesa de Penedo displays objects brought from Finland, including tapestries made on Finnish looms, old embroidery, and posters and prints from Finnish regions. Books, brochures, and maps are also part of the collections. LELUMUSEO adds to this cultural side as a toy museum; it is located at Avenida Michelângelo 216 in Jardim Martinelli, Penedo.
Buildings also tell of different chapters in the area's history. The Casarão is an old manor house from the coffee cycle in Penedo. Casa de Pedra was built by a Finnish colonist for his Finnish fiancée. Alongside the Finnish museum's keepsakes, these places offer different ways to explore Penedo's history.
At Clube Finlândia, the Baile Finlandês takes place on the first Saturday of every month, starting at 9 p.m. The dances include Finnish folk dances such as Jenkka and Letkis, as well as waltzes, tangos, polkas, mazurkas, samba, pagode, and rock. The program thus combines Finnish dance forms with other musical and dance styles.
Places to Include in Your Travel Plans
Casa do Papai Noel is located at Rua das Velas 100 in the Shopping Pequena Finlândia shopping center. This themed shopping center recreates a typical Finnish colony. Together with the museum, historic buildings, and dance event, it offers a different side of Penedo from its waterfalls and forest landscapes.
When choosing a vacation rental in Penedo, consider which of these interests you want to focus on during your trip: natural attractions such as waterfalls and viewpoints, or Finnish-influenced cultural history. If you want to experience both, you can include the different activities in your own travel plans without combining them into a single outing.
