Cabo Frio combines a distinctive coastal landscape with many facets of its history. At Praia do Forte, you’ll find 7.5 kilometres of fine white sand and clear water. The beach is also part of the Restinga ecosystem of the state of Rio de Janeiro. If you want to plan your trip around the sea, you’ll find a long city beach here and can explore Cabo Frio’s natural and cultural attractions side by side.

Beaches with different features

Praia do Peró also offers its own appeal, with a length of seven kilometres. It received the international Blue Flag award for the quality of its beach and water, as well as its accessibility. Praia das Conchas stands out for its calm, crystal-clear water, which is suitable for diving. You can reach it on foot either along the sand of Praia do Peró or via an unpaved road. These are two different routes, and no specific walking time is required.

Praia Brava is accessible only via a trail and is suitable for surfing. If you’re interested in this option, consider both the trail access and the surfing on offer when planning your trip. The beaches therefore differ not only in length and water conditions, but also in the activities and access options described.

Cultural history between beach and city

The coast also tells the story of Cabo Frio’s past: on the canal-side hills and rises in the area of Praia do Forte are sambaquis, evidence of the archaeological heritage. Forte de São Matheus de Cabo Frio, built in the 17th century, also stands on the beach. In 1967, IPHAN designated the landscape ensemble of Cabo Frio as a heritage site. Archaeological traces, a historic building and the protected landscape ensemble thus represent different aspects of the area’s history.

Historic buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries shape the Bairro da Passagem. The Igreja de São Benedito is located there; it was built in the 18th century by enslaved people. The Capela Nossa Senhora da Guia is also part of Cabo Frio’s history: built in 1740, it is part of the city’s religious and heritage-protected architectural ensemble. If you’re interested in the history of religious sites, you can explore these different buildings and their distinct historical contexts.

Art, surf history and views

The Convento de Nossa Senhora dos Anjos houses the Museu de Arte Religiosa e Tradicional. Its collection includes terracotta and wooden figures, furniture and other works of sacred art. The Espaço Cultural do Surfe offers a different perspective on cultural history: it was the first place in Brazil dedicated to surfing and holds more than 2,500 objects relating to the history of surfing. The range therefore extends from religious art to the development of surfing.

Morro da Guia is the highest point in Cabo Frio and offers 360-degree views of the city centre and surrounding area. The Bairro da Passagem also has a dining district with various bars and restaurants, bringing together food and music. For your holiday planning, this offers a choice between scenic views, cultural attractions and a culinary focus.

Choose the right focus for your accommodation

When looking for a holiday apartment or house in Cabo Frio, you can start by deciding which side of the area you want your holiday to focus on: the beach and water, surfing, historic buildings, sacred art or dining. The specific differences between the beaches can help you narrow down the experiences you’re looking for; museums, churches and historic sites add cultural history to your options.
