São Joaquim do Monte combines impressive religious art with a city park and lively festival traditions. At the town entrance on the PE-112 stands a 3.5-meter-high monument to Frei Damião. The Pórtico also has a telescope aimed at the Santuário do Frei Damião, which visitors can use to observe Alto do Cruzeiro. This landmark offers an early glimpse of the town’s different facets.

Religious art and local history

The Santuário do Frei Damião houses a 10-meter-high statue by José Caxiado da Silva, also known as Tita Caxiado. The sanctuary grounds also include the Igreja de São Sebastião and the Casa das Promessas. The history of the Romaria is also connected to this place: Frei Damião took part in its first three editions at the Santuário in 1993, 1994 and 1995. These details make the site an important destination for travelers interested in religious traditions and their expressions.

Another cultural attraction is the Museu Caxiado, an open-air art exhibition along a planned route with seven stops. Four stops have been completed and focus on different themes. On display are works by Caxiado, as well as photographs, certificates, banners, books, records, television reports, newspapers, magazines and documentaries about his life. The mix of artworks and different media offers various ways to explore Caxiado’s work and life story. A visit to the museum must be arranged in advance, so plan this activity accordingly.

The Igreja Matriz de São Joaquim do Monte was handed over, or completed, on January 6, 1916. Despite several changes, it has retained its shape and distinctive features. Those interested in the church’s history will find another cultural point of interest here. The secretariat is open Tuesday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Activities, festivals and nature

For outdoor activity in town, head to Parque Municipal Olga Mendonça. Its walking track is 800 meters long; the park also has a multipurpose sports court, a municipal sports facility, an amphitheater and an event courtyard. The facilities cater to different interests, from a walk along the track to sports and events. The park is open daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. If you’d like to include both culture and exercise in your trip, you can plan for each separately.

In June, the Arraiá do Monte takes place in the center of São Joaquim do Monte. The festival celebrates the roots of the June festivities and Northeastern Brazilian musical traditions. The 2nd Encontro de Danças Juninas featured around 17 performances. The June program included a procession through the town streets, with the Bacamarteiros de Bananeirinha group taking part.

Near São Joaquim do Monte is the Capela de Paizinho in Sítio Caiana. It contains around 1,000 plaster images of saints and 600 wooden ones, as well as paintings and oratories. Its collection includes pieces from the Netherlands, Portugal, the Vatican and Rio de Janeiro. Many worshippers gather there to pray the rosary. Also near the destination is Cachoeira Pedra Forte, which forms from rainwater during winter—a natural attraction distinct from the town’s cultural sights.

The Tradicional Festa de Reis is also part of São Joaquim do Monte’s festival history: the town held its 107th edition at Pátio de Eventos João Tenório Vaz Cavalcanti. Whether you’re planning your trip around culture, activities or religious traditions, São Joaquim do Monte offers several different themes for your stay. Other destinations to explore include Escada, Porto De Galinhas, Gravatá, Palmares, Tamandare, Afogados Da Ingazeira, Bezerros and Limoeiro.
