The mix of historic buildings, religious heritage, and festival culture gives you several reasons to visit Salgueiro. Architectural history, the Quermesse de Santo Antônio, and Carnival with Frevo each offer a different focus. In Salgueiro, you can first decide whether you are more interested in architecture, religious traditions, or music.

Historic buildings and their stories

The Casa da Cultura de Salgueiro is housed in a two-storey historic building that served as the central Sertão’s main trading post for more than half a century. The building’s design and former economic role give it different historical connections.

The Casario da Praça da Matriz consists of single-storey, adjoining houses. Some feature architectural elements dating from the end of the previous century and the beginning of this one. Compared with the Casa da Cultura, this reveals a different architectural form: connected single-storey houses rather than a two-storey building.

The Chalé Villa Maria was built in 1919. The building housing the Câmara de Vereadores de Salgueiro is part of the architectural ensemble around the Matriz de Santo Antônio and is protected as a heritage site under Municipal Decree No. 06/2002. Salgueiro’s architectural history can therefore be explored through a range of clues: former use, architectural features, a specific construction year, and protected status.

Religious heritage and festival culture

A traditional account links the history of Santo Antônio to the construction of a chapel. According to the account, construction began in 1835 at the place where three-year-old Raimundo de Sá was found, after his mother vowed to Santo Antônio that she would build a chapel if her son were found safe and sound. The chapel was completed around 1838. The timeline thus spans the traditionally recorded start of construction and its completion about three years later.

The Quermesse de Santo Antônio takes place over thirteen evenings in the Praça da Matriz. It includes novenas in honor of the patron saint, bingo games, auctions, a handicraft market, and popular performances at weekends. The local community takes part in the festivities. Religious observances and social activities thus offer different highlights within the same festival. Carnival centers on a different kind of tradition: the Bicharada de Mestre Jaime is a Carnival group from Salgueiro that parades through the streets to Frevo music. Here, music and movement come together in a street parade—a different focus from the celebrations in the Praça da Matriz.

A culinary connection to Pernambuco

Across the wider destination of Pernambuco, Bolo de rolo is recognized as cultural and intangible heritage. To make this cake, thin dough is spread with melted guava paste and rolled into layers. This pastry offers a culinary perspective on Pernambuco alongside Salgueiro’s architectural and festival themes.
