Rio Formoso combines historic churches in the town with diverse natural surroundings across the municipality: the estuary, mangroves and Mata Atlântica each shape a different side of the destination. When planning a holiday rental, it is therefore worth considering whether you mainly want to learn about the town’s history or focus on the natural environment and its experiences.

Churches and historic traces

The Igreja de São José was built in the 17th century and is considered the main church of the city of Rio Formoso. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos dates from the middle of the same century. Both churches anchor the town’s history in a specific period; São José has the special role of being the main church. If you are interested in architectural and religious history, you will find a clear cultural focus for your stay here.

Estuary and mangroves across the municipality

The entire area of the municipality of Rio Formoso lies within the Mata Atlântica biome. The municipality has 583 hectares of mangroves; the estuary complex also includes remnants of Mata Atlântica forest and mangrove forests. The estuary is considered extensive and well preserved, with diverse fauna. So, alongside its historic sites, river and mangrove landscapes are also central to experiencing Rio Formoso as a natural environment.

The APA Estuarina do Rio Formoso protected area covers 2,724 hectares and spans the municipalities of Sirinhaém, Rio Formoso and Tamandaré. Another protected area is the APA de Guadalupe: Morro do Reduto lies within this area, which was established on March 13, 1997, by State Decree No. 19,635. The APA de Guadalupe covers 32,135 hectares of land and 12,664 hectares of marine area, and spans parts of the municipalities of Sirinhaém, Rio Formoso, Tamandaré and Barreiros.

History, culture and experiences

Morro do Reduto is a historic site where the Batalha do Reduto took place in 1633 during the Dutch occupation of Pernambuco. Dia da Batalha do Reduto is part of the intangible cultural heritage of the state of Pernambuco and is observed each year on February 7. If you want to plan your trip around this date, check the program for that year in advance.

The Museu Quilombola also has a clearly dated history: it opened to the public on October 14, 2014, and has been visited by school groups, universities and people from the community. Another glimpse into the municipality’s cultural work is a project from 2023. At the time, Instituto Negralinda trained 50 Marisqueiras and craftspeople in courses and workshops on handicrafts, mangrove cuisine and community-based tourism. Sebrae PE and the local municipal government supported the training.

The Rota dos Manguezais de Rio Formoso is known as a boat trip through the municipality’s rivers and mangroves, guided by local guides, fishers and professional boat operators. The route is also associated with gathering shellfish, sururu and aratu together with Marisqueiras. If you want to plan this trip, check availability for your travel dates in advance.

For a family trip, you can give different interests different priorities: the churches and Morro offer connections to history, while the rivers, mangroves and gathering with Marisqueiras bring other themes to the fore. When looking for a holiday rental, the kind of trip you want can help guide your choice. Consider whether you mainly want to focus on cultural history, nature or the boat trip, and plan your trip accordingly.
