Discover Macaparana: Handicrafts, Forró and Local History
Accommodation in Macaparana
Macaparana showcases its cultural identity in special places and diverse traditions: Igreja Nossa Senhora do Amparo represents colonial architecture, the town museum presents local history, and events bring together handicrafts, accordion music, poetry and Capoeira. If you’re looking for cultural discoveries on your trip, the town offers different perspectives—from a museum visit to a festival programme.
A Church and Historic Homes
Igreja Nossa Senhora do Amparo features colonial architecture typical of religious buildings of its time. It offers a tangible glimpse into the town’s architectural history. Macaparana is also associated with the title “capital Estadual do Crochê”; this designation dates from 2014.
The Museu Municipal Moura Cavalcanti is located in the town hall. It presents Macaparana’s history as a place of cultural learning and is also visited by school groups. The collection mainly includes personal belongings of José Francisco de Moura Cavalcanti and old objects from the town. Photographs and banners tell Moura Cavalcanti’s story. Visitors can thus explore both the town’s history and the memory of an influential figure.
The Casa-Museu Fundação Anita Moraes offers a different personal perspective: it is on the opposite corner from the Museu Municipal Moura Cavalcanti, in Anita’s former home. Her personal belongings are preserved there almost unchanged. The contrast between the two houses is appealing to anyone who enjoys discovering culture through tangible objects and their stories: the town museum focuses on Macaparana and Moura Cavalcanti, while the Casa-Museu focuses on Anita Moraes and her former home. If you’d like to visit either house, check in advance what visitor arrangements are currently available.
Handicrafts, Accordions and Festivals
The eighth edition of MacaArte took place in Macaparana from 7 to 16 November 2025. It focused on local handicrafts and the work of the town’s artists. The title “capital Estadual do Crochê” points to another facet of local handicrafts: crochet.
At the Encontro de Sanfoneiros, the town’s accordion groups come together. The gathering celebrates local artists and keeps the tradition of authentic Forró pé de serra alive. At Festa de Reis 2026, Repentistas Roberto Raimundo and Zé Felinto performed music and traditional poetry. A Capoeira group also took part in the festival and engaged the audience. These examples show different ways of experiencing culture: accordion music and Forró, improvised poetry, and a performance that involved the audience. If you’d like to plan your trip around a particular festival, check the dates and programme for that edition in advance.
Market and Local Specialties
According to the customary weekly schedule, Feira Livre de Macaparana takes place on Saturdays in the town centre and offers items including spices and kitchenware. If you’d like to include a market visit in your weekly plans, check the Saturday schedule in advance. Bolo de rolo is associated with Macaparana; the cake was available in abundance at Feira Livre.
Your travel plans can help guide your search for a holiday rental: would you like to learn about the town’s history through its cultural sites, or connect your visit to Macaparana with a particular festival? If you’re travelling for an event, it’s worth checking the programme for that edition; for visits to the museum or Casa-Museu, ask about visiting arrangements beforehand. This way, you can choose your accommodation and travel dates to suit the experiences in Macaparana that interest you most.
