In Escada, Marian devotion, art and architectural heritage come together to offer a wide range of discoveries. The municipality in the state of Pernambuco provides plenty to explore during a stay that takes in religious history as well as painting and the preservation of memory. For families looking to accommodate a range of interests, this variety is part of the appeal: one day might focus on the history of the Matriz, another on Cícero Dias or a historic complex.

When choosing a holiday apartment, it is also worth considering what you plan to see. Some of the places described are in the town center, while others are located some distance from the municipal seat.

Marian Devotion and the History of the Matriz

The Santuário Mariano Nossa Senhora da Apresentação da Escada is in the municipality of Escada, 60 kilometers from the capital of Pernambuco. The present-day Igreja Matriz in Escada was built in 1874 under the direction of the Capuchin missionary Frei Caetano de Messina Sobrinho. Numerous devotees of Senhora da Escada supported its construction. On December 27, 2021, the Matriz da Escada was elevated to the status of an archdiocesan Marian shrine. It was the first shrine dedicated to Nossa Senhora in the Zona da Mata Sul region of the state.

The religious calendar includes the festival of Nossa Senhora da Apresentação da Escada. It is celebrated every year in November on the solemn Sunday of Cristo Rei do Universo. Those interested in religious traditions will find a history here that unfolds through the church’s construction, its veneration and its later elevation to shrine status. The two dates—1874 and 2021—mark different milestones: the construction of the present-day Igreja Matriz and the shrine’s later institutional status.

Art and Memory in the Municipality of Escada

The Museu Cícero Dias displays replicas of 22 works by the painter from the Suíte Pernambucana, as well as other works by the artist. The collection also includes objects and books about the history of the municipality of Escada. It thus connects the study of an individual artist with a broader look at the history of the place.

The Museu da Memória do Povo Marikito Tapuyá offers a different perspective. It is an initiative of the Movimento de Retomada Mata Sul Indígena and serves to preserve and strengthen this people’s cultural and historical roots, memory, traditions and language. If you plan to visit, confirm that visits are possible before you travel. This leaves room to explore the different cultural subjects according to your interests, without treating an art collection and a living culture of remembrance as the same thing.

Sugar Mills and Architecture

At Engenho Jundiá, the Casa Grande and the chapel form an ensemble of great artistic, historical and cultural value to the municipality of Escada. The complex is 15 kilometers from the municipal seat. Cícero Dias is also connected with this place: the painter was born at Engenho Jundiá. Here, biographical history and architectural heritage meet, without one replacing the other.

Another architectural detail can be found at the manor house of Engenho Sapucaji: its staircase is made of Lioz stone, a Portuguese limestone. In the town center, the fully restored building of the Câmara Municipal da Escada retains its original features. These include arched windows and a front garden and a side garden. Each of these details gives the architectural heritage its own character. As the condition of historic buildings can change, it is advisable to check for current information before visiting.

Horseback Riding and a Convenient Location for Your Stay

A description published in March 2026 presented the Cavalgada do Turismo as an approximately four-hour horseback ride starting at Engenho Sapucaji, scheduled for the second weekend in September. If you would like to include this activity in your travel plans, check beforehand whether it is taking place on your chosen date. The approximate duration offers a guide for planning your time, but does not indicate the current schedule.

One practical difference to bear in mind when looking for a holiday apartment is that the Câmara building is in the town center, while the complex at Engenho Jundiá is 15 kilometers from the municipal seat. Consider whether you would prefer a stay focused on central architecture or would also like to include Jundiá.
