Arcoverde brings vibrant culture together with traces of its history and trails through the municipality’s landscape. In the city, museums, markets and traditional crafts take centre stage; beyond the urban area, hikes offer different perspectives on the region. You can plan your trip around whether culture, regional cuisine or outdoor activity deserves the most time.

Culture and traditions in Arcoverde

The Museu do Boi de Pernambuco in Arcoverde preserves, in a shared collection, the interconnected stories of the Bumba-meu-boi groups, their masters and Pernambuco’s cultural practitioners. The city’s carnival Bois are also part of its cultural heritage: the Museu do Boi de Arcoverde preserves records and props relating to them and documents the stories of its masters and contributors. Samba de Coco is another defining cultural theme. The Rota dos Cocos aims to make this tradition accessible throughout the year through open rehearsals, festivals, celebrations and visits to the groups’ headquarters; arrange specific visits in advance.

The Coco Pisada Segura group holds rehearsals on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Public visits are possible by prior appointment. Confirm rehearsal and visit dates again before your trip. Traditional wooden shoes are made at the Ateliê Mestre Assis Calixto for use in the trupé during Samba de Coco performances. Here, culture is expressed not only through events but also through craftsmanship.

The city’s architectural history can also be read through specific places. Igreja Nossa Senhora do Livramento dates back to a chapel built in 1841; the settlement that grew around it gave rise to today’s Arcoverde. The historic Igrejinha Batista was inaugurated in 1926, has been preserved, and serves as an annex to the new Baptist temple. These two sites make tangible different periods in the city’s history: the settlement’s early origins and a later place of worship that has been preserved.

LICBOIS operates in a galpão at Estação da Cultura, Arcoverde’s former railway station, dating from 1912. The Memorial Frei Damião preserves a collection of documents about the life of Frei Damião de Bozzano. Along with the museums and religious buildings, these places offer different ways to explore the city’s history and cultural life.

Markets, regional cuisine and crafts

In the centre of Arcoverde, CECORA, which opened in 1986, hosts the city’s traditional fair. Part of the original structure of the former SANBRA complex has been preserved. The Centro de Gastronomia e Artesanato de Arcoverde, or CGA for short, has a different focus: more than 20 stalls offer regional cuisine, crafts and handmade products. The CGA also has a dining area and a stage for artistic and cultural performances.

The Casa do Artesão in the city centre displays and sells local crafts, including items made from straw, biscuit, fabric, crochet and wood. If you are interested in regional materials and how things are made, you can discover a different side of local craftsmanship here than at the CGA, which combines cuisine and crafts. When planning your trip, it makes a difference whether you focus on markets and central cultural sites or on the rural trails in the municipality.

City views and trails in the municipality

For a view of the cityscape, Mirante do Cruzeiro Novo, also known as Morro da Santa Cruz, is located in the north of Arcoverde. Serra do Jacaré, by contrast, is a rocky outcrop in the mountain area known as Caiçara, on the outskirts of the BR-232, within the municipality of Arcoverde. Its flora is predominantly native to the Caatinga biome. These differences help distinguish urban viewpoints from the municipality’s landscape as separate excursion destinations.

The Trilha da Caiçara is an easy, approximately 5 km out-and-back nature hike. It starts at Alto Cruzeiro and leads to the foot of Serra do Jacaré. The Trilha do Lajedão is on Estrada do Deserto in the rural northwest of the municipality; this easy, 7 km out-and-back hike includes a rocky outcrop and offers a view of the sunset. Another option is the approximately 9 km out-and-back hike on the Trilha da Serra da Coruja in the west of Arcoverde. It includes a short climbing section and an average elevation of 600 metres; along the way, you get wide-ranging views of the area around the Serra.

In the rural southeast of the municipality, the Santuário da Divina Misericórdia has hiking trails. This destination and the trails in the northwest and west have different geographical focuses, so you do not need to plan them as a single area. If you are considering several hikes, first compare the stated distances, trail conditions and starting points.

Getting there and choosing the right location for your holiday rental

The BR-232 runs through Arcoverde, including its urban area. The bus station is on Avenida José Bonifácio in the São Cristóvão neighbourhood. These details can help you plan your journey and search for a holiday rental, without assuming any particular connection or travel time.

You can choose your accommodation based on what you want to focus on: if you mainly plan to visit cultural sites in the urban area, consider your preferred location in Arcoverde when searching. If rural hikes are your priority, check each trail’s starting point and your accommodation’s location separately. This keeps the city itinerary and excursions around the municipality as two clear planning considerations for your stay.
