Águas Belas offers two distinct ways to experience the area: the Serra do Comunaty, with its springs, waterfalls and hiking opportunities, and a local history reflected in Fulni-ô culture, churches and historic buildings. If you’re looking for a holiday rental in Águas Belas, you can make your choice based on whether nature experiences or culture and local history are the main focus of your trip.

Landscape and hiking opportunities

The Serra do Comunaty is home to springs and waterfalls. Its vegetation includes remnants of Atlantic Forest, and there are also places suitable for hiking. This makes the Serra a scenic counterpoint to the cultural attractions of the urban Sede. You can weigh these different features separately when planning your trip: if you enjoy spending time outdoors, you can make the Serra and its hiking opportunities the focus; if you’re especially interested in local history, Águas Belas offers many other points of interest.

The name Fulni-ô also points to a connection with the landscape: it is associated with the Rio Ipanema and explained as “people of the riverbank.” In Águas Belas, then, connections with nature are found not only in the Serra but also in the significance attributed to the river in this interpretation of the name.

Fulni-ô culture and religious traditions

The Aldeia indígena Fulni-ô is an urban cultural site in the Sede of Águas Belas; the settlement has existed for more than a hundred years. Prior authorization from FUNAI is required to visit the Fulni-ô people in Águas Belas. Keep this requirement in mind if you’d like to include a visit in your trip. The Ponto de Cultura of the Fulni-ô and the Monumento ao toré are also located in the urban Sede.

Religious traditions are also part of the area’s cultural identity. The Cruzeiro da Passagem do Século was erected in 1900 to celebrate the beginning of the new century; it is also part of the rituals of the Fulni-ô Nation. The Monumento à Yassaklane is dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição. These different associations show how the area’s history has been shaped by both religious symbols and Fulni-ô traditions.

The Festa de São Sebastião is one of the major popular festivals in Águas Belas. It includes a novena and a procession through the streets of the town that has been held for centuries. The festival also features Pífano bands and artistic performances.

Churches, houses and industrial history

The Paróquia de Nossa Senhora da Conceição in Águas Belas was founded on January 26, 1766. The Igreja de São Sebastião was consecrated in 1949. The more than hundred-year-old Igreja Presbiteriana is also regarded as the first Protestant church founded in the municipality. These three churches represent different chapters in the area’s religious history and offer culturally interested travelers various historical points of reference.

Residential buildings also tell the stories of former residents and the development of Águas Belas. The Casarão do cel. Francisco Martins was the residence of Chico Martins, who was mayor of Águas Belas in the late 1910s. The Casarão do cel. Salustiano Cavalcanti de Siqueira was a manor house and the residence of Salustiano de Siqueira. The Solar Maria Malta was built in the 1920s. The Algodoeira, also known as Vapor, is part of the area’s industrial history: it was an important cotton-ginning factory in Águas Belas.

The Museu Vovô Frederico is located on Alameda Dep. Pedro Eugênio in the urban Sede. In Bairro Ipanema, Morro do Galo is one of the tourist attractions in the urban area.
