Santa Helena combines views of the Itaipu Reservoir with waterfront experiences, the Rota da Fé, and regional landscapes and cultural offerings. The destinations differ both in their themes and in their geographical scope: a lookout point, a beach promenade, and places in the surrounding municipality each give the trip a different focus.

Views, waterfront and a longer route

The 12-meter-high Monumento Cristo Esplendor has a lookout point offering views of the city, green spaces, and the Itaipu Reservoir. The built environment, open spaces, and water all come together in the panorama. If you’d like to experience Santa Helena first from a lookout point, this is a specific place to start.

The Rota da Fé also begins at the Monumento Cristo Esplendor. The approximately 65-kilometer route can be traveled by bicycle, on foot, or on horseback. It leads to the Monumento de São Pedro in the municipality of Missal and passes the Monumento de Nossa Senhora Aparecida in Itaipulândia. Unlike a visit to a single lookout point, the route is a longer undertaking with named stops and a destination. Its length is approximate; check route conditions before setting out.

The Balneário Terra das Águas offers a different perspective: it has a 950-meter-long beach and a waterfront promenade. Santa Helena therefore offers a choice between a lookout point with views of the city and reservoir and a clearly defined waterfront experience. If water and waterfront experiences are a priority when you’re looking for a vacation rental, this feature is a specific point to consider when planning your trip.

Landscape and nature in the surrounding area

The Refúgio Biológico Santa Helena is located near the destination. The 1,421-hectare protected area was officially established by Itaipu Binacional in 1984 to restore fauna and flora in the area around the Itaipu Reservoir. Its focus on nature conservation complements the views of the reservoir and the waterfront promenade with another landscape perspective: here, the focus is on a large protected area and its restoration purpose.

Morro dos Sete Pecados is located in the municipality of Santa Helena, in the Sub-Sede region. This rural tourist attraction offers panoramic views of Itaipu Lake. This differs from the view at the Cristo Esplendor lookout point: there, the panorama includes the city, green spaces, and the reservoir, while Morro offers a rural perspective of the lake from its location in the Sub-Sede region.

Historic places and local food culture

Further afield in the region, the Memorial Coluna Prestes e Ponte Queimada preserves the ruins of the old bridge and is considered an important historic attraction in the municipality of Santa Helena. The Memorial Coluna Prestes is also protected as municipal cultural heritage and marked by an obelisk designed by Oscar Niemeyer. The ruins, heritage site, and obelisk give the visit a different focus from views and waterfront experiences: here, the emphasis is on traces of history and a purpose-built memorial.

The Festival do Costelão is also part of the local food culture. Held annually, the event showcases a dish typical of the municipality of Santa Helena. The festival thus connects a specific food with a local tradition. If you’d like to include the event in your trip, check the dates separately; its annual recurrence does not establish a specific date for your travel plans.

What the destinations mean for your accommodation search

When choosing a vacation rental, it helps to first sort out the different geographical focuses. Cristo Esplendor and Balneário Terra das Águas are destinations in Santa Helena; the Refúgio Biológico is nearby, Morro dos Sete Pecados is in the municipality’s Sub-Sede region, and the Memorial is further afield in the region. Consider whether you mainly want to visit places in town or also include landscape and cultural sites in the municipality and the wider region.
