Jaguariaíva: Discover nature, culture and canyons
Accommodation in Jaguariaíva
Nature and culture come together in different ways in Jaguariaíva, Paraná. Within the city lies a reserve of Atlantic Rainforest vegetation along the Rio Jaguariaíva; across the municipality, valleys, sandstone outcrops and waterfalls shape its protected areas. Quirerada and cultural events complement these natural attractions. When looking for a vacation rental in Jaguariaíva, you can decide whether the urban natural area and culture or excursions to protected areas will play a greater role in your trip.
Quirerada, Tropeirismo and religious tradition
Quirerada offers a concrete introduction to local cuisine. A municipal culture report dated May 13, 2024, describes it as Jaguariaíva’s official traditional dish. The cultural festival “Partes de Nossa História” is also part of the events calendar: a municipal report from the same date describes it as traditionally held in September to celebrate the anniversary of Jaguariaíva. Since 2011, the festival has presented Tropeirismo. The dish and festival thus offer different perspectives on local culture—one through food, the other through the history and tradition of Tropeirismo.
The Capela Santo Antônio de Pádua stands in the Pesqueiro neighborhood. Built in 1957, the chapel is a pilgrimage site visited by people from across the region. Visits are not possible. Those interested in religious sites and their significance to a region can therefore regard the chapel as a place of pilgrimage, not as a sightseeing destination.
A nature reserve within the city
Parque Ambiental Dr. Ruy Cunha lies within the city of Jaguariaíva along the Rio Jaguariaíva and is a reserve of Atlantic Rainforest vegetation. Facilities include trails, a reception area, a mini-museum with taxidermied animals, and restrooms. Individual facilities may change; check what is currently available before your visit. The trails can be used on foot or by bicycle. The park offers a connection with nature within the city, while the municipality’s protected areas provide separate destinations for excursions.
Rock landscapes and waterfalls across the municipality
In Parque Estadual do Vale do Codó, the Rio Lajeado Grande and the Rio Jaguariaíva form valleys with steep walls; outcrops of Furnas sandstone can be found there. The Cânion do Rio Lajeado Grande is approximately 450 meters long, with an elevation difference of about 50 meters. Cachoeira do Véu da Noiva also has an elevation difference of approximately 50 meters. For the canyon, length and elevation difference are two separate measurements of the landscape; for the Cachoeira, the elevation figure describes the waterfall.
Parque Estadual do Cerrado lies in the municipalities of Jaguariaíva and Sengés, 12 kilometers from the seat of Jaguariaíva municipality. It preserves remnants of Cerrado ecosystems, canyons and waterfalls. Trails lead to Cachoeira do Ribeirão São Antônio, rapids and smaller waterfalls, as well as a 40-meter-high waterfall. From a lookout point, visitors can view the canyon of the Rio Jaguariaíva. An excursion can therefore include both trails to waterfalls and a lookout point with a view of the canyon.
Access routes for planning excursions
Access to the Parque Estadual do Vale do Codó region is via PR-151. Traveling from Ponta Grossa toward Sengés, you can turn onto an unpaved side road near Jaguariaíva’s urban area at kilometer 211. To reach Parque Estadual do Cerrado, travel from the center of Jaguariaíva toward Cidade Alta and the Copel substation in the Samambaia neighborhood; from the unpaved road, it is 11 kilometers to the park. The information refers to different points of reference: for Vale do Codó, it describes access to the park region; for Cerrado, it describes the route from the unpaved road.
Jaguariaíva also regularly hosts the Feira da Lua. It brings together small-scale producers, entrepreneurs and cultural performances. Dates and programs may change; check them before making plans. Along with Quirerada, the festival and Parque Ambiental, the fair offers other ways to enjoy the city if you do not want to focus your stay exclusively on excursions to protected areas.
