Afogados Da Ingazeira offers two distinct ways to experience a trip: rock art and the Caatinga shape the nature theme at Serra do Giz, while carnival traditions, museums, and a former radio building lead into the area’s cultural and urban history. This range is useful when planning your holiday: you can first decide whether landscape, living traditions, or historical collections should shape your stay most.

Rock art and the Caatinga at Serra do Giz

Dozens of rock art images can be seen at Serra do Giz. The Serra do Giz Wildlife Refuge protects the Caatinga biome and its biodiversity in the municipalities of Afogados Da Ingazeira and Carnaíba. The rock paintings and several viewpoints overlooking the landscape attract researchers and tourists. Here, visible traces in images meet the distinctive landscape of a protected Caatinga area: the rock art also gives the nature theme a cultural connection.

Carnival, dance, and handicrafts

During carnival in Afogados Da Ingazeira, Tabaqueiros walk through the streets alone or in groups, wearing masks and carrying whips and bells. The tradition is passed down through generations and is a striking example of the carnival’s distinctive expression. Another dance tradition is the Dança de Coco dos Negros e Negras do Leitão, which is associated with descendants of Quilombola communities.

Handicrafts also offer a tangible cultural perspective: the featured works include colorful fabric dolls in various shapes and sizes. Together with the masked Tabaqueiros and the dance tradition, they show different forms of local creativity and expression.

Museums and religious history

The Diocesan Museum of Afogados da Ingazeira was established in 2008 to mark the diocese’s 50th anniversary. Its purpose was to tell the story of the diocese and highlight the work of bishops Dom Francisco Austregésilo de Mesquita Filho, Dom João José da Mota e Albuquerque, and Dom Luís Gonzaga Silva Pepeu. A religious celebration with a specific date took place on Good Friday 2022 at the Catedral do Senhor Bom Jesus dos Remédios: the diocesan bishop led the liturgical celebration of the Passion of the Lord there from 3 p.m., and the cathedral was full of worshippers.

The Radio Museum is located in the São Francisco neighborhood in the former Rádio Pajeú building, which housed the station from the 1950s through the 1970s. Its collection includes radios from the 1930s through the 1970s, as well as devices that illustrate the development of radio. This makes it possible to consider the history of the medium and the building’s past as two connected themes.

The São José Cinema-Theater also has a clearly defined history: it opened in 1942, closed in 1994, and reopened in late 2003. This sequence of opening, closure, and reopening gives the venue a distinct place in the cultural history of Afogados Da Ingazeira.

A historical glimpse into recreational use of the water concerns the Brotas Dam: in April 2018, when water levels were high, residents went swimming and relaxed there; some tried to fish. Since water levels can vary, check the water level and visitor access before making specific plans.
