São Bento combines a historically important hammock industry with festivals that explore religious, cultural and textile themes. The Rio Piranhas also shapes the town: it runs through São Bento and offers opportunities for hikers and people who want to explore the trails. This raises a practical question as you plan your trip: would you like to time your stay around a festival, learn about the town’s textile history, or also set aside time for trails and scenery?

Hammocks as part of the town’s history

São Bento is now known as “Capital Mundial das Redes” — the “World Capital of Hammocks.” The historically important hammock-making industry is part of the town’s development. Santa Luzia Redes e Decoração offers another glimpse into the textile heritage: the company has been producing textiles in São Bento, in the state of Paraíba, since 1986.

EXPO TÊXTIL SÃO BENTO also brings textiles together with the town’s cultural life. The public event includes an exhibition of textile products as well as cultural and artistic performances. It is associated with September; specific dates and programmes may change. If the EXPO is important for your travel dates, check the schedule in advance.

Festivals with different themes

Festa de São Sebastião is a traditional festival organised by Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião. Its ten-day programme combines social activities with daily Masses and cultural events; admission is free. The three-day cultural festival Arraiá Balançando a Rede focuses on traditional foods, Quadrilhas and traditional forró pé-de-serra music. The festival is considered a decades-long tradition. Dates and programmes may change, so it is worth checking in advance if you plan your stay around one of these festivals.

Other events have their own themes. São Bento Fest is a carnival held outside the usual carnival season. It has a tradition spanning more than 20 years and entertains residents of São Bento and the surrounding region. Vaquejada draws on northeastern Brazilian culture and the figure of the sertanejo cattle herder; its tradition goes back more than 30 years. Motofest, meanwhile, is a free motorcycle gathering in a public square, organised by São Bento’s Moto Clube Amigos do Asfalto. Together, these examples show how varied the themes of local events can be.

River and landscape in the municipality

The Rio Piranhas runs through São Bento and offers opportunities for hikers and others who want to explore the trails. Trail conditions may vary. The Santuário Virgem dos Pobres is also located near the bridge over the Rio Piranhas. The river and the sanctuary thus provide two distinct, specific landmarks for finding your way around the area.

Outside the town, but within its municipality, lies the Quilombola community of Contendas. It is one of two such communities in the Município de São Bento. Ecotourism opportunities there include caves, rock engravings and mountain scenery. Contendas is therefore within the municipality but not in the town itself — a distinction that may matter when planning activities.

Plan your stay around your interests

If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can start by considering which aspect of São Bento you would most like to focus on during your trip. For festival culture, the specific event dates are key; if you are interested in textiles, the hammock industry offers a special connection to the town’s history. The river and trails, as well as the landscape of Contendas, offer other experiences, though Contendas lies outside the town.
