Esperança: Carnaval, Chapels and Local History
Accommodation in Esperança
Esperança brings together an annual festival and traces of religious and settlement history. The Carnaval de Esperança, the Ala-Ursas tradition, and the history of Tanque do Araçá offer different perspectives on the town. When choosing a vacation rental, you can consider whether festival culture or historical discoveries should be the focus of your stay.
Carnaval and the Ala-Ursas Tradition
The Carnaval de Esperança is held every year as a cultural and traditional event. The program includes local artists and regional performances, as well as traditional Blocos, Arrastões, and activities for all age groups. The festival thus brings together local and regional contributions with different traditional forms.
The Ala-Ursas tradition in Esperança is another cultural thread. It goes back many years and draws visitors during this festival. For travelers interested in regional festival culture, both individual program events and a long-standing local tradition are worth keeping in mind.
Water Source and Early Local History
Colonists named a water source Tanque do Araçá. Nearby, the Portuguese man Marinheiro Barbosa built a house and named the place Beleza dos Campos; the present-day city of Esperança stands on that site. The two names refer to different points in the town’s history: Tanque do Araçá was the name of the water source, while Beleza dos Campos was the name of the place where Esperança now stands. Tanque do Araçá is also a tourist site and a water reservoir historically associated with the beginnings of settlement.
Chapels and Religious History
A chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Bom Conselho was founded in Esperança in 1860. At the time, Esperança was known as Banubuié. The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Bom Conselho in Esperança was dedicated to Santo Afonso Maria de Ligório. The patron saint of the chapel founded in 1860 and the dedication of the Igreja Matriz are therefore distinct religious references: the church bears the name Nossa Senhora do Bom Conselho but is dedicated to Santo Afonso.
Another chapel is the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Perpétuo Socorro. It was built on January 1, 1925, during a cholera epidemic, on a rocky plateau on Rua Barão do Rio Branco. The dates mark different milestones: 1860 refers to the founding of the Nossa Senhora do Bom Conselho chapel, while 1925 marks the construction of another chapel on the rocky plateau described here. Together, these named sites and their different dedications offer a concrete glimpse into Esperança’s religious history.
A Focus for Your Vacation Rental Search
When searching for a vacation rental in Esperança, you can start by deciding on your main area of interest. Are you most interested in the annual festival, or would you rather focus on settlement and religious history? Carnaval offers a clear connection to festival culture; Tanque do Araçá and Beleza dos Campos lead into the history of settlement, while the chapels and Igreja Matriz provide their own historical reference points through their different dedications and dates.
