Capanema brings together railway history, religious festivals and places to visit by the water. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between places in the city centre and rural destinations within the municipality. This can help you decide whether cultural events or time at the waterside should shape your stay—and which location best suits your holiday rental search.

Railway History and the City Centre

The Antiga Caixa d’Água da Ferrovia, a public tourist attraction marked with signs and associated with railway history, is located on Avenida Magalhães Barata. As signage and access conditions may change, it is best to check them shortly before your visit. The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Perpétuo Socorro is on Travessa César Pinheiro in the city centre. It is considered a notable example of Capanema’s historical and cultural heritage.

Another site connected with railway history is in the district of Mirasselvas, within the municipality of Capanema: the Antiga Estação Ferroviária was built in 1908. Its eclectic architecture shows a slight Art Deco influence. Together with the railway heritage and the church, these sites offer different cultural highlights—from a historic structure on a city street, to a building in the city centre and a station in the district.

Religious Festivals and Cultural Events

Marujada includes religious cultural performances in December for São Benedito and in January for São Sebastião. Children, young people and adults take part; specific programmes may vary. The annual Corpus Christi procession, also known as “Círio de Capanema,” passes over an intricately decorated carpet of flowers, sand and sawdust. Its exact date depends on the national calendar, so checking the current date is useful when planning your trip.

From 2011, the Feira da Cultura was held in June in a public square. Its programme included exhibitions of local culture, handicraft sales, and performances by musicians and local folk groups. If you would like to include this event in your trip, ask locally in advance whether an event is currently taking place and what programme is planned. This helps distinguish time-specific cultural events from the historic buildings that are there year-round.

Water Attractions in the Municipality

The private Lagoa Azul excursion site is in the municipality’s rural area, on Rodovia BR-308 at kilometre 7. It is designated for swimming and observing the flora. Facilities include a free, uncovered car park with space for ten cars, as well as a restaurant, bar and snack bar. Opening hours are listed as 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. year-round; check current access conditions before setting out.

The public Balneário Rio Quatipuru on Rodovia PA-448 is also designated for swimming and observing the flora. It is listed as open around the clock all year. Check current operating conditions before your visit. Both destinations combine water and nature observation, but differ in their stated status: Lagoa Azul is private, while the Balneário is public. Use this information to plan excursions that suit your interests, while keeping the different conditions in mind.

There are also bars and restaurants along the Rio Quatipuru, which people visit in July. The river forms the boundary between Tracuateua and the district of Mirasselvas. Alongside the designated water attractions, it offers additional places to visit and stop for refreshments. Check in advance whether the facilities are available.
