Several very different interests in discovery stand out in Barão de Cocais: the Iron Route offers non-motorized activities and traces of railway history. Pedra Pintada de Cocais brings together rock art panels, quartzite, and rocky vegetation in a landscape and topographical setting. At Casa do Artesão, meanwhile, handicrafts are connected with the history of the place and its residents. As you plan your trip, you can consider whether you want to focus on activity, nature and rock art, or local crafts.

The Iron Route: activity along a historic railway line

The Iron Route is exclusively intended for cycling, horseback riding, walking or running, and non-motorized sports. It follows the route of the former, now-disused Ramal Nova Era (EFSSB). This connection shapes the character of the route: it is not just a trail for different forms of activity, but also a route with a history of railways. The route is about 80 kilometers long and runs from Sabará through Caeté and Barão de Cocais to Santa Bárbara. Barão de Cocais is therefore one of the explicitly named places along this route.

Along the Iron Route, travelers may come across abandoned railway stations, remnants of structures, and small tunnels. These different traces give the route more than one point of interest: in addition to the journey itself, the described experience also includes architectural remnants and the former railway line. If you are interested in the route, you can therefore consider whether cycling, horseback riding, walking, or running should take center stage—or whether the railway traces associated with the route particularly pique your curiosity.

Rock art panels and handicrafts

Pedra Pintada de Cocais offers a different focus. It comprises four shelters and a quartzite cave in an area of rocky vegetation. It also features rock art panels set in a local landscape and topographical context. This makes its themes quite distinct from those of the long Iron Route, which passes through several places: at Pedra Pintada, interest and attention center on rock formations, vegetation, and rock art panels. The four shelters and the cave are specific features of the site; the rock art panels add a cultural dimension to this setting.

Casa do Artesão also offers a distinct way to discover the history of Barão de Cocais. There, various handicrafts come together, connected with the history of the place and its residents. This adds a craft perspective to the landscape and historical themes. If you would like to accommodate different interests on a trip, you can distinguish between activity on the route, exploring the rock art panels, and the history of handicrafts, without combining these experiences into a single excursion theme.
