Alta Floresta: Amazon Rainforest, River Landscape and Culture
Accommodation in Alta Floresta
Amazon rainforest and river landscape in Alta Floresta
Alta Floresta combines nature experiences with cultural discoveries. A notable example of the region’s landscape is Parque Estadual do Cristalino: the protected area covers 66,900 hectares, lies in the Amazon biome and extends across Alta Floresta and Novo Mundo. It belongs to the full protection category. The Amazon rainforest in the municipality of Alta Floresta also shapes the character of the destination: its flora and fauna are rich in species, and centuries-old trees grow among them. For your trip planning, this means a different focus from a stay centred mainly on museums, handicrafts or regional food.
At the Rio Teles Pires, also known as the Rio São Manoel, the landscape changes with the water level. During the dry season, the river carries crystal-clear water; during the high-water season from October to May, the water is dark and high. If you are interested in river landscapes, this seasonal contrast is a distinctive part of the destination. There is also a small beach on the Rio Teles Pires, which tourists visit for sport fishing and relaxation. Another natural spot is the area around Lagoa das Capivaras, a public space for recreation and wildlife watching by residents and tourists.
Right in the town, Figueira Gigante offers a very different highlight: the tree stands on Avenida do Setor G, is more than 35 years old and has a trunk over 4 metres in diameter. Such very different natural attractions—from an extensive protected area and a river to a single large tree—give you several ways to discover Alta Floresta, where nature takes more than one form.
Museum, handicrafts and activities
Museu de História Natural de Alta Floresta covers several fields of knowledge. Its three permanent exhibition rooms house collections on archaeology, palaeontology, geology, zoology and ethnology. The subjects range from early traces and the history of the Earth to wildlife and human cultures. For a culturally focused stay, Casa do Artesanato also offers a distinctive way to experience the region: it is managed by Associação Altaflorestense de Produtores Artesanais and sells decorative items, household goods and souvenirs made by artisans from Alta Floresta and the surrounding region.
If you would like to include a variety of activities in your trip, Sítio Flores offers an ecological trail, animal and bird watching, themed workshops, and artistic and cultural activities. Rancho Odílio offers riding lessons, recreational riding and equine therapy. Each of these options has its own focus: wildlife watching and trails, workshops and culture, or riding activities. When planning, you can decide which experiences matter most for your trip rather than structuring every day in the same way.
Regional cuisine and getting around
Regional produce and food are also part of Alta Floresta’s character. At the Feira Livre da Produção Rural e do Empreendedor Individual Odílio Oliveira de Paula, products from family farms, typical dishes, snacks and natural products are sold on Sunday mornings. The food festival Sabores da Floresta is considered a tradition in Alta Floresta. Its eighth edition took place on June 10, 11 and 12 and celebrated ingredients from the Amazon biome. The market and festival offer two different ways to encounter regional products: one is a Sunday-morning market, the other a food festival edition highlighting ingredients from the Amazon biome.
The BR-163, BR-364 and MT-320 are important road connections for Alta Floresta. When choosing a holiday rental, it helps to first decide what matters most to you: rivers and wildlife watching, culture and handicrafts, or regional food.
