Batayporã: Festivals, History and Trails
Accommodation in Batayporã
Batayporã combines a lively festival scene with the Centro de Memória Jindrich Trachta and a network of walking and cycling routes. The city is part of the Vale das Águas tourism region in Mato Grosso Do Sul. Depending on when you travel, religious traditions, cultural events, or outdoor activities may shape your stay. When choosing a vacation rental, it helps to first decide whether to focus on a festival, history, or the trails.
Festivals with different focuses
Every year on June 13, the Catholic community gathers to celebrate Saint Anthony as its patron saint. The Festa de Santo Antônio has been celebrated since 1972. Its religious program includes a solemn Mass, the blessing and distribution of Santo Antônio rolls, and a procession of vehicles through the city streets. Law No. 1,390 of May 16, 2025, officially recognized the Festa de Santo Antônio de Pádua as a cultural, traditional, and popular manifestation of the municipality of Batayporã.
The Festa do Sereno offers a different focus: at the 2026 edition, stalls selling typical foods and an amusement park complemented the music program. The 45th edition took place from June 26 to 28. The festival is part of the cultural calendar of Mato Grosso do Sul and attracts visitors from various cities in the region. Batayporã thus offers two distinct event themes: a religious patron-saint celebration and a festival featuring music, food stalls, and an amusement park.
A place of remembrance and trails
The Centro de Memória Jindrich Trachta opened in September 2001 and preserves the historical and cultural collection left by Jindrich Trachta. It is located in part of the former CVSPMT administrative building, where Trachta lived. The collection and the building give the site a tangible connection to history. The Centro has also become a point of reference for many tourists from today’s Czech Republic who visit Brazil.
Three trail systems start and end at the Centro de Memória. Together, they cover 97 kilometers and are marked in blue, red, and green; they can be used for hiking and cycling tourism. A 2019 report describes the trails. In 2015, the Centro de Memória Jindrich Trachta and Klub Cescke Turistú jointly marked 19 kilometers of ecological trails using an international marking system. Before setting out on a specific route, check its current condition.
Lagoa do Sapo and planned improvements
Lagoa do Sapo is one of the most important public spaces for community life and recreation in Batayporã. As of August 2026, plans for the recreational area included pergolas, benches, landscaping, an expanded children’s playground, and parking as part of a project. These plans offer a different focus from the trails and the place of remembrance. If you would like to include the area in your plans, check the project’s current status; the scope may change during construction.
Mato Grosso Do Sul in the wider travel picture
The wider destination of Mato Grosso Do Sul also includes the Pantanal: it is the world’s largest floodplain, and about 65 percent of its area lies in the state. In 2000, UNESCO recognized the Pantanal as a biosphere reserve. The Estrada-Parque Pantanal was created to preserve biodiversity and promote ecotourism in Mato Grosso do Sul. These landscapes offer a glimpse of the state, while Batayporã itself belongs to the Vale das Águas tourism region.
The wider destination also has a diverse cultural heritage. The craft tradition Modo de Fazer a Viola de Cocho is found in Mato Grosso do Sul and Mato Grosso and was added to IPHAN’s Livro dos Saberes in 2005. The Arraial do Banho de São João is recognized as intangible cultural heritage of Mato Grosso do Sul and, by IPHAN, as intangible cultural heritage of Brazil. The festival brings together faith, tradition, dance, and typical cuisine and attracts thousands of people every year; its program may vary.
