Discover Santa Inês as a place with two distinct sides: the history of the settlement is closely tied to sugarcane transport, while Praça da Matriz and Lago do Remanso add cultural and scenic highlights. When choosing a holiday rental, it is worth first considering whether you want to focus your trip more on local history and religious traditions or on lakes and beaches. Both are part of the city’s tourism profile.

From the railway terminus to the town centre

Santa Inês was originally called “Ponta da Linha.” The settlement arose at the terminus of a railway built in 1884 by Companhia Progresso Agrícola. It served sugarcane plantations supplying the Engenho Central in Pindaré-Mirim; the private railway was used to transport the sugarcane harvest there. Rua do Comércio is also part of this history: it was formerly called Rua da Boiada, and ox carts carried sugarcane along it to the Engenho in Pindaré. Today, Ponta da Linha corresponds to the administrative seat of Santa Inês. The original settlement developed around Praça da Matriz. Together, these places tell the story of a city in which the railway and sugarcane transport played an important role.

Praça da Matriz and cultural traditions

In the centre of Santa Inês is Paróquia Santa Inês – Igreja Matriz, on Praça da Matriz. The new Igreja Matriz de Santa Inês was inaugurated in 1985 and became a city landmark. The square itself is also known for its cultural and religious significance. The Festa da Padroeira Santa Inês is considered an important local religious celebration and is associated with 21 January.

Other events showcase a range of cultural influences. “Arraial da Gente 2015” took place at Parque da Raposa in the centre of Santa Inês and was described as a traditional São João festival of Vale do Pindaré. On 29 May 2026, “Primeiro Festival do Hambúrguer” used Praça da Matriz for a culinary event featuring regional flavours and live music. These examples represent different kinds of occasions: a religious celebration, a São João festival and a culinary programme.

A municipal description from November 2024 lists Tambor de Crioula, Quadrilha, the Festa do Divino Espírito Santo, Bumba-meu-Boi, Capoeira, Indigenous dance, Gypsy dance and Portuguese dance as popular cultural forms in Santa Inês. Those interested in traditions will find a broad range of named forms here, from music and dance to religious festivals.

Traditions in the state of Maranhão

In the state of Maranhão, Bumba meu boi and Tambor de Crioula have cultural significance beyond the region. Bumba meu boi do Maranhão was listed as Brazilian cultural heritage in 2011 and recognised by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2019. The festival cycle comprises four main stages: rehearsals, the ox’s baptism, performances and the ritual of its death. During the June festival cycle, Bumba meu boi brings communities together in a celebration combining faith, music, dance, theatre and traditional knowledge.

Tambor de Crioula do Maranhão was recognised as Brazilian cultural heritage in 2007. The tradition is practised in virtually every municipality in the state. Dance, singing and percussion come together in celebrations that unite art, faith and collective memory. This context belongs to the broader destination of Maranhão and adds cultural context without describing individual events in Santa Inês.

Lakes, roads and choosing where to stay

Beaches and lakes are among the main tourist attractions of Santa Inês. Lago do Remanso is considered particularly scenic and is about 11 kilometres long. Alongside the town’s history and cultural points of interest, this lake landscape offers another reason to visit. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can use these different draws to tailor your search for a location to your travel interests: local history and culture, or lakes and beaches.

The road network is also relevant for getting around: Santa Inês lies at the junction of BR-316, BR-222 and MA-320. BR-222 runs through the administrative seat. These road connections add to the picture of the city as a transport hub and provide another point of reference when planning your trip and the location of your accommodation.
