Santa Helena on the Rio Turiaçu
Accommodation in Santa Helena
Santa Helena’s history is tied to the Rio Turiaçu: the town was founded on the river’s right bank, and the early settlement was an Indigenous village called Laranjal. The riverbank and the town’s name provide two concrete historical points of reference for the destination.
River setting and archaeological traces
The Boca do Rio archaeological site is located in the municipality of Santa Helena, on an arm of the Rio Turiaçu. It covers one hectare and preserves about 1,150 wooden stakes on the bed of its river channel. This brings together two distinct points of reference along the river: the founding of Santa Helena on the right bank and the site on a river arm. The river’s history is revealed here from different perspectives—as local history and as an archaeological subject within the municipality.
Cultural connections and gatherings
The Tupinambaranas dance was created in Santa Helena in 2002. Alongside the early settlement of Laranjal, it provides a clearly dated cultural point of reference: the town’s history goes back further than the creation of this dance. In October 2017, the cultural administration reported on a cultural evening in Santa Helena featuring circles of Tambor de crioula, Forró de caixa, and other local performances.
The traditional Torneio de Domingo de Ramos was held at Beira Rio as a cultural and sporting gathering. A municipal report dated April 14, 2025, describes the tournament; the Domingo de Ramos competitions also included canoeing. Another type of event was the Feira da Agricultura Familiar: a local report from July 2019 says it reached its 30th edition at the Mercado Central, bringing together small-scale farmers, fishermen, and consumers. In 2010, Santa Helena was one of 26 municipalities included in the state-supported Divino Maranhão project for the Divino Espírito Santo festivities, which involved more than 165 festival participants.
Fishing and local cuisine
Traditional fishing practices along the Rio Turiaçu in the municipality of Santa Helena include salting and drying fish. A study published in 2021 describes how these practices continue across generations and influence the social and economic lives of traditional fishers. In this way, inherited ways of working are part of the local perspective on the river, alongside its landscape and history.
A 2023 account characterizes the local cuisine by fish from the Turi and free-range chicken raised by residents of riverside communities. This presents two perspectives on fish side by side: traditional preservation in the municipality and fish as part of the cuisine described. The free-range chicken adds another ingredient from the riverside communities to this culinary picture.
