São Domingos: Caves, Landscapes and Traditions
Accommodation in São Domingos
São Domingos combines a striking cave landscape nearby with religious festivals and traditions in town. From the town, you can see Pico do Moleque in the foothills of the Serra Geral–Espigão Mestre. São Domingos serves as a starting and support point for tourist expeditions in Parque Estadual de Terra Ronca; the caves and activities around the park offer very different experiences—from views into vast chambers to challenging routes in.
Caves around Terra Ronca
Lapa Terra Ronca I stands out for its dimensions: its entrance is 96 meters across, and the cave is 120 meters wide. At Lapa Terra Ronca II, a path about one kilometer long leads through the cave to various chambers. In the main chamber, the phenomenon known as the “blue beam” occurs between April and July; conditions can vary.
Lapa Angélica also offers a range of experiences. It is 14 kilometers long and is considered easy to access for people of all ages, including children. Regular guided tours take visitors to lower and upper chambers with speleothems of different sizes, shapes, and colors. Caverna São Mateus, meanwhile, is 22 kilometers long and is described as Brazil’s third-largest cave; parts of its interior have not yet been explored.
The routes vary in difficulty. The distance from the parking lot to Lapa São Vicente II is about four kilometers; reaching it requires excellent physical fitness. Access to Lapa São Vicente I involves a 40-meter rappel. The main access to Galeria São Bernardo is via a sinkhole 200 meters from the swallow hole and involves a 50-meter change in elevation. At the entrance to Lapa Terra Ronca I, rappelling activities are organized for adventurous groups: participants hike through dry forests to the cave roof and rappel into the entrance as far as the riverbed inside the cave. Before taking part in such activities, check who organizes them and which permits are required.
Landscapes, birdwatching, and water
The Serra Geral is visible along much of the access road to Parque Estadual de Terra Ronca. Birdwatching is particularly recommended in the park. Birds found in the seasonal dry forests include Tiê-caburé (Compsothraupis loricata), Maria-preta-do-nordeste (Knipolegus franciscanus), and Formigueiro-de-barriga-preta (Formicivora melanogaster).
Another way to experience nature is at Prainha on the Rio São Vicente: there is a swimming area with crystal-clear water and a gentle current, as well as wooden and thatched kiosks built by the local community. Cave visits, birdwatching, and time by the water offer different ways to spend a day, without requiring the same kind of outing.
Getting there and visitor information
São Domingos serves as a starting and support point for tourist expeditions in the park. The area can be reached via paved roads branching off BR-020, the main route connecting Brasília (DF) and Barreiras (BA). The administrative headquarters of Parque Estadual de Terra Ronca is in the municipality’s rural area, 13 kilometers from the village of São João Evangelista. It can be reached via the unpaved road connecting São João Evangelista with the village of Piteira. Check road conditions before setting out.
The open caves Terra Ronca I and II, Angélica, São Bernardo, and São Mateus are open to visitors from 08:00 to 17:00. Openings and hours may change; check the latest information before your visit.
Religious traditions in São Domingos
The annual Festa de Bom Jesus da Lapa takes place in São Domingos and has been held there for about 80 years. It attracts religious visitors and tourists from different places. The Folias do Divino have also been part of the city’s religious life for many years. Held on several dates throughout the year, they are carried on by eight traditional folias groups from the region. The groups perform at events in and outside the city; visitors come for them from Brasília, Goiânia, and other cities, among other places.
The cultural heritage of the Terra Ronca area also includes rock paintings: evidence of earlier populations can be found near the entrance to Lapa Pau-Pombo and on a wall among the rock formations at Fazenda Vaca Brava.
When choosing a vacation rental, you can prioritize what interests you about the trip: cave routes vary in length and physical demands, while birdwatching, the swimming area on the Rio São Vicente, and the traditions of São Domingos offer other highlights. The town’s role as a starting and support point for expeditions is a practical consideration when looking for a suitable base.
