Iúna: History, Coffee Culture and the Imperial Route
Accommodation in Iúna
Iúna can be explored through several distinct highlights: the history of the first Igreja Matriz is linked to the town’s growth, the Rota Imperial São Pedro D’Alcântara runs through the center and along rural roads, and the Festa do Café celebrates coffee culture. Viewpoints in the wider region offer privileged views of the Serra do Caparaó. This lets you consider town history, the route, the event and the landscape as different facets of a trip.
History in the town and beyond
The first Igreja Matriz, dedicated to Nossa Senhora Mãe dos Homens, was completed in 1879. Its construction encouraged urban growth around the temple—a concrete link between religious heritage and Iúna’s development.
Another historic site is within the municipality but outside the urban area: the Cemitério dos Escravos was established more than 150 years ago on the grounds of the former Fazenda Saudade, in the district of Nossa Senhora das Graças. This distinction is useful when planning: the cemetery is part of the municipality of Iúna, but it is not an urban site.
The Imperial Route, coffee culture and landscape
The Rota Imperial São Pedro D’Alcântara passes through Iúna’s town center and along rural roads. It connects natural landscapes, cultural heritage and traditional communities. If you make the route the focus of your visit, you can take this mix of scenery and culture into account when planning your trip.
The Festa do Café is held in Iúna to welcome visitors and celebrate coffee culture. A municipal announcement from August 2025 mentions the twelfth edition. If you would like to experience the event, check the dates and program for your planned visit.
The natural viewpoints overlooking the Serra do Caparaó are part of the wider region around Iúna. They are therefore in a different location from destinations in the town center. If the landscape is important to your trip, include these viewpoints in the wider area in your plans.
Getting there and choosing where to stay
Iúna is about 190 km from Vitória. Depending on the route and traffic, the drive takes around 2 hours 50 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes. Iúna is mainly accessible by car or bus. Buses depart from Vitória bus station and are operated primarily by Viação Águia Branca. Allow some flexibility in your plans, as journey times vary by route and traffic, and check the schedule before you leave.
When choosing a holiday rental, it is also worth considering which areas will shape your stay. The town’s history and the Imperial Route are linked to the center; the Cemitério dos Escravos is in the district of Nossa Senhora das Graças, while the viewpoints are in the wider region.
