Baixo Guandu combines a distinctive riverside setting with waterfalls, viewpoints and a well-established ceramic culture. The Rio Guandu, a tributary of the Rio Doce, runs through the municipality. Baixo Guandu is also one of the nine municipalities in the Doce Pontões Capixaba tourism region. This offers several starting points for planning your trip: nature spots, cultural sites and the town’s location within a larger tourism region. Which holiday rental in Baixo Guandu suits your plans also depends on which of these aspects you most want to explore.

Water, Views and Landscape

Cachoeira de Água Santa is one of Baixo Guandu’s tourist attractions and is located in the district of Ibituba. The location therefore identifies not only the waterfall, but also its specific connection to Ibituba. Cachoeira Alto Laje is in a different location: it lies on the border between the municipalities of Baixo Guandu and Itaguaçu and is surrounded by areas of preserved Atlantic Forest vegetation. For this natural attraction, the landscape of protected vegetation is also part of its defining character.

At Mirante do Rosário II, a viewpoint offers an opportunity to take in the beauty of Baixo Guandu. Pedra do Souza adds another geographical highlight: it reaches a height of 465 metres and lies between Baixo Guandu in the state of Espírito Santo and Aimorés in the state of Minas Gerais. Its height and location describe the rock formation without implying a particular access point or hiking route.

Parque da Lagoa is also a place to spend time outdoors: it was opened for public use for walks. The town’s features include a variety of natural and landscape attractions, from the waterfall in the district of Ibituba to the viewpoint and walks in the park. You can decide which of these different destinations to prioritise based on what you would most like to discover on your trip.

Ceramics, Buildings and Local History

Baixo Guandu is known as the land of ceramics and has several factories in its neighbourhoods. Ceramics are therefore a defining cultural feature of the town. There are also buildings with a variety of historical connections: Igreja Matriz de São Pedro is one of Baixo Guandu’s tourist attractions. Edifício Madame Albertina Holz is an architectural example from the early 20th century in the state of Espírito Santo.

The connection between the states of Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais also plays a part in the town’s history. Ponte Jones dos Santos Neves, also known as Ponte Mauá, was the first link between Baixo Guandu and the Mauá neighbourhood in Aimorés. The current Ponte Mauá was inaugurated in 1981. The bridge thus has its own historical significance alongside the buildings and ceramic culture.

The town’s sporting history includes several national and international paragliding events that Baixo Guandu has hosted. This connection with sporting events adds another perspective to the destination’s cultural and landscape features.

Getting There and Choosing a Place to Stay

The usual road route from Vitória to Baixo Guandu follows the BR-101 and then the BR-259. The distance to another destination, Rampa do Monjolo, is also specified: it is 20 kilometres from Baixo Guandu and can be reached via the ES-446. If the take-off ramp is of interest to you, you can factor this distance into your day’s plans.

Baixo Guandu brings together a river, natural attractions, ceramic culture and historic buildings, without prescribing a single fixed itinerary. When choosing a base for your trip, you can weigh the town’s location against the destinations that interest you most. Find more information about the town on the Baixo Guandu page.
