Maranguape: Architectural History, Crafts and Humor
Accommodation in Maranguape
Maranguape invites you to explore the city’s history through specific places: buildings in the historic center, houses with Portuguese tiles and squares with changing uses. The municipality also offers crafts and cultural destinations, as well as a memorial site nearby. You can shape your stay around your interests, whether you are especially drawn to architecture, local culture or a range of experiences.
Historic Sites in the Center
The historic walking tour of Maranguape includes Solar dos Correias and Solar Bonifácio Câmara. The historic center is characterized by colonial and eclectic architecture. The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Penha is also part of the city’s history: it is considered a milestone in the development of the city center.
The Projeto Conhecendo Maranguape walking tour also includes Praça Cel. Sombra, which formerly served as a bus station, and Casa de Cultura Capistrano de Abreu. The route also passes the houses with Portuguese tiles on Rua Major Agostinho and the Sociedade Artística. The stops showcase different aspects of the area, from a public square and historic houses to cultural institutions. The Museu da Cidade is also located in the historic center, in the former Cadeia Pública.
The Projeto Conhecendo Maranguape is open to local residents, visitors and interested groups. Those wishing to join the city tour can request to take part by email. Another, now-completed initiative was Expedição Maranguape: in September 2026, it led schoolchildren on foot through the historic center, past historic buildings and squares, and by Casa do Chico.
Culture, Humor and Crafts
Casa Chico Anysio is located near the destination. It is the birthplace of Chico Anysio and is now a memorial site honoring the comedian, writer and artist from Ceará. The associated museum features caricatures and puppets of his characters, as well as book covers and biographical panels. This collection offers a distinctive focus alongside the architecture and cultural sites in the center.
Handicrafts are also part of the cultural offering. At Casa de Cultura Capistrano de Abreu, Maranguarte showcases ceramics such as vases and pots, woodwork such as household items, and decorative paintings. Textile work rounds out the selection: on display are embroidery, crochet, Rechillieu, filé, tapestries and patchwork. This offers a perspective that ranges from architectural heritage to different materials and craft techniques.
Experiences in the Municipality of Maranguape
Some destinations are located within the municipality and should not be confused with the historic city center. These include the Área de Proteção Ambiental da Serra de Maranguape, a municipal protected area within the municipality of Maranguape. It covers 5,936.46 hectares. Also within the municipality, in the Sapupara district, is the Museu Comunitário do Território de Sapupara (MCTS), an open-air museum. It grew out of a group of local residents who wanted to share the area’s cultural heritage and promote the right to history and memory.
Cachaça is another theme. The Museu da Cachaça at iPark Complexo Turístico is housed in an original manor house dating from 1846; its collection includes old machinery and coins. One of its attractions is a wooden barrel with a capacity of 374,000 liters, described as the largest in the world. At iPark, Engenho Artesanal presents a simulation of the production process for artisanal cachaça. iPark Complexo Turístico offers more than 30 outdoor activities. If a particular activity is essential to your trip, check its availability for your planned dates.
The Festival Nacional de Humor de Maranguape is also among the municipality’s cultural highlights. It is recognized as an event of local and national importance. Together with the memorial site honoring Chico Anysio, it adds a humorous perspective alongside architectural history, crafts and cachaça culture.
Choose the Right Focus for Your Stay
When looking for a vacation rental in Maranguape, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on. If you are mainly interested in historic architecture and cultural sites, the stops in the center are the main draw. Crafts and humor add to these themes, while the protected area, Sapupara and iPark offer destinations elsewhere in the municipality. Since the places described are in different geographic locations, you can choose the destinations that suit your interests and take their locations into account when planning.
