Jijoca De Jericoacoara is a municipality where coastal landscapes, nature experiences and local traditions shape the character of the destination. It is worth distinguishing between the municipal seat and Vila de Jericoacoara: the Vila is the tourist centre and brings together a large part of the visitor experience in the municipality. Which places you choose to focus on may therefore also influence your choice of location for a holiday rental.

The municipal seat and the Vila as different points of reference

From Fortaleza, you can reach the municipal seat via CE-085, also known as Rodovia do Sol Poente. From Jijoca, an unpaved road runs for more than 20 kilometres to Vila de Jericoacoara. The two places are therefore not interchangeable: if you are planning your trip mainly around the Vila, you should take this distance and the road conditions into account when choosing a location. Road conditions and transport arrangements can change; check them separately for your trip.

So the first practical question when looking for a holiday rental is which point of reference suits your plans: the municipal seat of Jijoca or the Vila, the destination’s tourist centre. This distinction helps you align your choice of location with the experiences you want, without assuming a particular travel period or accommodation location.

Coast, dunes and nature in the national park

Parque Nacional de Jericoacoara covers around 8,800 hectares of protected coastal ecosystems. It lies on the coast between the municipalities of Jijoca de Jericoacoara and Cruz. Its purposes include protecting coastal ecosystems and natural resources, as well as supporting scientific research, environmental education and ecotourism. The landscape is therefore more than just a backdrop: dunes, water and coastal areas provide the setting for a range of nature experiences.

One striking formation is Pedra Furada, a rock arch shaped by wave action in the rocky area of the national park. It can be reached by a hiking trail or along the beach at low tide, so access via the beach depends on the tides. Duna Por do Sol by the sea in Parque Nacional de Jericoacoara is a popular place to watch the sunset. A solar-powered lighthouse stands on Serrote, and its natural viewpoint is known for sunrises.

The waters also show different sides of the municipality. Lagoa de Jijoca lies in the municipalities of Jijoca de Jericoacoara and Cruz and is used for leisure and tourism. Lagoa da Jijoca formed when shifting dunes in the coastal plain dammed the Paraguai and Mourão streams; it is a popular natural attraction. In Mangue Seco, mangroves, dunes and waterways combine to shape the landscape. Poço do Ananias offers a different coastal scene: at low tide, trapped seawater forms a natural pool there.

Beaches and activities with different focuses

The beaches offer different ways to enjoy an active stay. Praia Principal is popular with windsurfers; shallow water and steady winds define the beach, although wind conditions vary. To the east of the bay lies Praia da Malhada, surrounded by rocks and often used for surfing.

In Parque Nacional de Jericoacoara, canoe trips pass through the mangroves of the Rio Guriú to observe seahorses (Hippocampus reidi). Horseback rides along the beaches and through the dunes are also among the experiences described there. So, alongside views of the coast and dunes, nature observation and physical activity are also in focus. In the municipality, the Roda de Capoeira is associated with Duna do Pôr do Sol: according to the description, it starts every day at dusk, as visitors descend the dune, and the sound of the berimbau draws the attention of locals and visitors. Check locally to confirm whether it is currently taking place.

Festivals, handicrafts and places to meet

Local culture includes traditions with different forms and historical associations. During Paixão de Cristo, costumed participants process through streets, beaches and dunes on Good Friday and Holy Saturday. The Tradicional Festival de Quadrilhas is organised by the municipal government.

Igreja de Jijoca was inaugurated on 13 December 1964, the feast day of Santa Luzia. It is a place of prayer and a tourist attraction in the region. Handicrafts are also part of the cultural scene: crochet is a tradition passed down from generation to generation in Jijoca de Jericoacoara. In the Vila, the Feira de Artesanato showcases the techniques of artisans and cultural practitioners, including macramé, filigree, woodcarving and metalwork. If you plan to visit the Feira, check the current opening hours.

With its mix of coast, nature and culture, the municipality appeals to a range of travel interests.
